Train is an enduring American pop rock band formed in 1993 in San Francisco, known for blending alternative and adult contemporary sounds. The group initially gained traction with the hit songs “Calling All Angels” and “Drops of Jupiter,” propelling them to mainstream success during the post-grunge era. Since their rise in the late 1990s and through the 2000s, encapsulated by the surprise hit “Hey, Soul Sister,” Train has cultivated a loyal fanbase and has solidified their status as one of America's beloved bands.
The journey of Train began when founding member Pat Monahan left his hometown of Erie, Pennsylvania in search of musical opportunities in California. In 1993, he formed a partnership with Rob Hotchkiss, and they soon added guitarist Jim Stafford to their lineup. The group was completed in 1994 with the inclusion of bassist Charlie Colin and drummer Scott Underwood. They spent the next few years touring across the country, establishing a following strong enough to attract the attention of Columbia Records. Their debut album, Train, was released in 1998, featuring the hit song "Meet Virginia."
However, it was Train's second album, Drops of Jupiter, released in 2001, that propelled them to international fame. Fueled by its titular single, the album achieved double platinum status, spawning eight Top 40 hits and earning Train two Grammy Awards. Following up with My Private Nation in 2003, which went platinum and included the popular track "Calling All Angels," the band's momentum continued until the departure of original members Hotchkiss and Colin, leading to a three-year hiatus after the release of For Me, It’s You in 2006, which had a lukewarm commercial reception.
Train made a strong comeback with their 2009 album, Save Me, San Francisco, which contained the mega-hit "Hey, Soul Sister." This song became a cultural phenomenon, certified 11× platinum, and reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was well-received, with additional singles such as “If It’s Love” and “Marry Me” also charting successfully, showcasing a resurgence in the band’s popularity.
In the ensuing years, Train released several albums, including California 37 (2012), featuring the international hit "Drive By," and Bulletproof Picasso (2014). They also paid homage to rock legends with Train Does Led Zeppelin II in 2016 and continued to produce new music with A Girl, a Bottle, a Boat in 2017. As of 2025, the band consists of Pat Monahan alongside Taylor Locke, Hector Maldonado, Jerry Becker, and Matt Musty, showcasing a refreshed lineup while retaining their signature sound.
Throughout their illustrious career, Train has sold over ten million albums worldwide, affirming their place in the music industry. As they wrapped their most recent tour in the fall of 2017, fans eagerly anticipated new material; the band continues to create and perform, ensuring that their impact on the pop rock landscape remains profound and enduring.
