Albert Leornes Greene, professionally known as Al Green, is an American singer, songwriter, pastor, and record producer, born on April 13, 1946. By the age of sixteen, he had formed his first R&B group, Al Green & the Creations, which later changed its name to the Soul Mates. The group gained initial success with the single "Back Up Train," which reached number five on the charts in 1968, marking a promising start to Green's musical journey.
In 1969, Al Green met Willie Mitchell, the bandleader and vice president of Hi Records. Mitchell immediately signed Green to the label and began collaborating with him on his debut album, Al Green Is Blues, released in 1970. The album showcased Green's signature style, characterized by a sultry groove, lush string arrangements, and his impressive falsetto. Its critical acclaim laid the groundwork for Green’s subsequent albums.
Green's follow-up album, Al Green Gets Next to You, also released in 1970, produced the hit "Tired of Being Alone," further solidifying his status in the music industry. His 1972 album Let’s Stay Together featured the title track, which became one of his signature songs. Through the early 1970s, Green continued to achieve success with his albums, including I'm Still in Love With You (1972) and The Belle Album (1977), as well as establishing his own studio, American Music.
Despite setting a strong foothold in the secular music scene, Green experienced a profound personal loss when his girlfriend died by suicide, prompting him to become an ordained pastor and shift towards gospel music. He later returned to secular music, releasing Lay It Down in 2008, which marked his most successful album in thirty-five years, reaching number nine on the Billboard chart.
Throughout his career, Al Green has received numerous accolades, including induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and winning 11 Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award. He has been recognized as one of the most gifted purveyors of soul music and referred to as "The Last of the Great Soul Singers." In addition to his musical achievements, he was honored with the Kennedy Center Honors in 2014 and recognized by Rolling Stone as one of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time."
In more recent years, Green has continued to perform and record, albeit not extensively, and launched his own YouTube channel to share live performances and recordings with fans. His autobiography, Take Me to the River, was published in 2009, offering insights into his life and career. While no significant tours are planned, Green remains an influential figure in both the music industry and his community.
