Natalie Merchant, born in 1963 in Jamestown, New York, is a renowned musician and performer whose roots in music run deep. Growing up in a household filled with musical influence, her Italian grandfather played guitar and mandolin, while her mother actively encouraged her children to study music. Merchant’s childhood was filled with visits to the symphony and concerts, laying the groundwork for her artistic development. As a teenager, she began her musical career singing for a band called Still Life, which eventually evolved into the celebrated group 10,000 Maniacs.

During her time with 10,000 Maniacs, the band released several independent albums before signing with a major label in 1985. Their breakout album, My Tribe, released in 1987, reached the top of the charts, followed by the equally successful Our Time in Eden in 1992. Merchant's emotive voice and insightful lyrics helped define the band's sound, and they garnered a devoted following. However, in 1994, she made the decision to leave 10,000 Maniacs to pursue a solo career.

In 2015, she released Paradise Is There: The New Tigerlily Recordings, reimagining songs from her early solo career, enhancing many tracks with strings while stripping others back, illustrating her enduring connection to the music she crafted.
