Liz Phair Biography

Elizabeth Clark Phair, known as Liz Phair, was born in 1967 in Connecticut and initially made her mark in the early 1990s as a pioneering figure in the indie rock movement. Her musical journey took a significant turn when she met Chris Brokaw, a member of the band Come, who encouraged her to record a demo. This initiative led to her early work under the moniker Girly Sound and steered her into Chicago's vibrant alternative music scene, where she rapidly became a notable presence.

Phair's rise to prominence was solidified after she caught the attention of Gerard Cosloy from Matador Records, who agreed to listen to her demo. This collaboration resulted in her acclaimed debut album, *Exile in Guyville*, released in 1993. The album quickly gained critical acclaim and established her as a significant artist in the music world. Her follow-up, *Whip-Smart*, featured the hit single “Supernova” and achieved Top 40 status, further enhancing her visibility on radio and MTV.

Following her successful early albums, including *Whitechocolatespaceegg* in 1998 and *Liz Phair* in 2003, she continued to evolve her sound while releasing memorable singles like “Turning Japanese” and “Polyester Bride.” In 2008, she transitioned to ATO Records and reissued *Exile in Guyville*, adding three previously unreleased tracks. The single “Faith and Tenderness” followed in 2009, and by 2010, she released *Funstyle*, showcasing her relentless creativity.

Throughout her career, Phair has branched out beyond music recording, venturing into television and film composition. She has contributed to shows such as *Swingtown*, *90210*, and *In Plain Sight*, and composed the score for the film *People Like Us* in 2012. In 2016, she performed as the opening act for The Smashing Pumpkins on their tour, further solidifying her place in the contemporary music scene.

In 2018, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of her debut album, Matador Records released a retrospective set titled *Girly Sound to Guyville*, featuring remastered versions of her demo tapes alongside rejuvenated performances from tours that celebrated her pioneering influence on music. This event reignited interest in her work and demonstrated her lasting impact on the industry.

On the production front, Phair has been actively working on new material, collaborating with original producer Brad Wood for her upcoming album *Soberish*, released in June 2021. The album received favorable reviews, with publications like Pitchfork praising its depth and connection to her earlier works. Despite canceling some tour engagements, Phair completed a successful tour in the fall of 2023, celebrating the 30th anniversary of *Exile in Guyville*.

Looking toward the future, Phair announced a publishing deal with Warner Chappell Music in August 2024, affirming her continued relevance and commitment to her craft. With nearly three million records sold and numerous accolades—including Grammy nominations and ASCAP awards—Liz Phair remains a significant and influential figure in the music landscape.
