Bad Company was formed in 1973 by Simon Kirke, Paul Rodgers, Boz Burrell, and Mick Ralphs, all of whom were former members of notable bands such as Free, Mott the Hoople, and King Crimson. The band's unique blend of rock became highly influential and contributed significantly to the classic rock genre throughout the decade. Bad Company was the first band to sign with Led Zeppelin’s Swan Song label and released their self-titled debut album, Bad Company, in 1974. The album quickly became a commercial success, propelled by the hit single "Can’t Get Enough of Your Love."
The band continued to build on their early success with subsequent albums, including Straight Shooter (1975), which featured the popular track "Feel Like Makin' Love." They released a series of albums over the next few decades, including Run with the Pack (1976), Burnin’ Sky (1977), and Desolation Angels (1979), among others. Their discography showcases a multitude of hit singles that have become cornerstones of classic rock radio.
In the new millennium, Bad Company continued to perform and tour with a lineup that included Simon Kirke, Paul Rodgers, Mick Ralphs, Howard Leese, and Todd Ronning. The group toured with notable artists, including a joint tour with Lynyrd Skynyrd in 2013 and a North American tour with Joe Walsh in 2016. They also celebrated their legacy through the re-release of their first two albums, Bad Company and Straight Shooter, in 2015, which included newly remastered tracks as well as rare demos and previously unreleased songs.
In the late 2000s, Bad Company made significant returns to the stage, including a one-off performance in 2008, which featured the remaining original members along with Howard Leese and bassist Lynn Sorenson. This concert was intended to protect the band's legacy and trademark. The performance was subsequently released on Blu-ray, DVD, and CD. Additional performances followed in 2009 and 2010, showcasing the band's enduring appeal.
In 2012, Bad Company made their first appearance in Europe outside the UK in 37 years, performing at the Sweden Rock Festival. The band continued to tour, announcing a 40th Anniversary Tour with Lynyrd Skynyrd in 2013. From 2016 onward, they performed various tours while experiencing lineup changes, including the temporary absence of guitarist Mick Ralphs due to health issues.
Despite their ongoing performances, Bad Company faced challenges, including the passing of former lead singer Brian Howe in May 2020. In a recent interview, Simon Kirke indicated that the band's future was uncertain due to health concerns affecting Paul Rodgers. As of 2025, Bad Company was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the first time, highlighting their significant legacy in rock music.
