Counting Crows is an American rock band hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area, formed in 1991. The group consists of vocalist Adam Duritz, guitarist David Bryson, drummer Jim Bogios, keyboardist Charlie Gillingham, multi-instrumentalist David Immerglück, bass guitarist Millard Powers, and guitarist Dan Vickrey. Known for their emotive lyrics and distinct sound, they first burst onto the music scene after signing with Geffen Records just a year after their inception.
Their debut album, August and Everything After, was released in 1993 and marked a meteoric rise to fame, driven by the hit single "Mr. Jones." With hauntingly poetic lyrics crafted by Duritz and a sound reminiscent of the late 60s and early 70s rock, the album resonated with audiences and sold over 7 million copies in the U.S. alone. The band garnered critical acclaim, receiving two Grammy nominations in 1994 for "Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal" for "Round Here" and "Best New Artist."
Following their debut success, Counting Crows released Recovering the Satellites in 1996, which reached number one on the U.S. Billboard 200. Their subsequent albums, including This Desert Life (1999) and Films About Ghosts (2003), further solidified the band's place in rock history. Their singles, such as "Rain King," "A Long December," and a cover of Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi," have become staples in their catalog. The band also received an Academy Award nomination for "Accidentally in Love," which was featured in the blockbuster film Shrek 2.
In 2008, Counting Crows celebrated the legacy of their debut album by performing August and Everything After in its entirety at New York City's Town Hall, a show that was recorded for both DVD and album release. The band continued to captivate audiences with their dynamic live performances, reflecting their signature blend of rock and introspective lyricism.
In 2009, Counting Crows embarked on a unique tour called the "Saturday Night Rebel Rockers Traveling Circus and Medicine Show," where they shared the stage with fellow artists in a collaborative format, breaking down the traditional barriers of concert performances. The group remains active, releasing their most recent albums, Underwater Sunshine and Somewhere Under Wonderland, in 2012 and 2014, respectively, along with the live album Echoes of the Outlaw Roadshow in 2013.
In recent years, Counting Crows have continued their musical journey, releasing the four-song EP Butter Miracle: Suite One in 2021. The band’s frontman, Adam Duritz, has described their upcoming projects as suites of music to be presented through EPs, showcasing the band's evolving creativity. Amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Duritz shared his culinary explorations on social media, blending his love for music with a newfound passion for cooking.
Counting Crows remains a beloved presence in the rock world, consistently engaging fans through their live shows and new music. As they prepare for future tours and releases, including the anticipated Butter Miracle: Suite Two, the band's enduring legacy continues to grow, affirming their status as one of the defining acts of their generation.
