Hootie & the Blowfish is an American rock band that was formed in Columbia, South Carolina, in 1986. The original lineup consisted of Darius Rucker, Mark Bryan, Dean Felber, and Jim Sonefeld, all of whom were students at the University of South Carolina. Initially playing cover songs around Columbia, the band's sound and chemistry quickly evolved. After Brantley Smith departed, Jim Sonefeld joined, solidifying the quartet that would go on to achieve significant fame and success.
The band released their debut album, Cracked Rear View, in 1994, which became a massive commercial success, achieving platinum status almost immediately. This landmark album produced hit singles such as "Hold My Hand," "Let Her Cry," and "Only Wanna Be with You," helping it to ultimately reach 22 times platinum certification, one of the best-selling albums in U.S. history. The band's success was recognized with a Grammy Award for Best New Artist, marking the beginning of their influential presence in the music industry.
Following Cracked Rear View, Hootie & the Blowfish released several subsequent albums, including Fairweather Johnson in 1996 and Musical Chairs in 1998. Their self-titled album, released in 2003, and the 2005 album Looking for Lucky continued to showcase their unique sound. In addition to continuous studio work, the band also released compilation albums such as Scattered, Smothered and Covered and The Best of Hootie & the Blowfish, and live recordings like Live in Charleston.
In 2008, the band announced a hiatus to allow Rucker to pursue a solo career in country music. While they did not officially disband, their public appearances were limited primarily to charity events and benefit concerts during this period. Notably, the band spent significant time aiding in the reconstruction efforts in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina and toured with the USO to perform for American troops stationed overseas.
Hootie & the Blowfish made a highly anticipated return in 2019, announcing a reunion tour to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Cracked Rear View. The Group Therapy Tour, featuring Barenaked Ladies, kicked off on May 30, 2019, in Virginia Beach and concluded on September 13 in Columbia, their hometown. That same year, they released their first new studio album in 14 years, Imperfect Circle, which further cemented their legacy as a vital force in rock music.
In the years following their reunion, Hootie & the Blowfish have continued to create music, releasing a cover of R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion" in April 2020. The band remains active in both recording and touring, looking forward to future album releases and live performances. Members of the band have also ventured into literature, with Sonefeld releasing a memoir, Swimming with a Blowfish, in 2022, and Rucker following suit with his memoir, Life's Too Short, set to publish in 2024.
With a career spanning nearly four decades, Hootie & the Blowfish have left an indelible mark on the music industry, earning two Grammy Awards and landing 16 singles on various Billboard charts. Their artistry, characterized by heartfelt lyrics and catchy melodies, continues to resonate with both long-time fans and new listeners alike.
