Barenaked Ladies Biography

Barenaked Ladies (BNL) is a Canadian rock band formed in 1988 in Scarborough, Ontario. The group originally started as a duo consisting of Ed Robertson and Steven Page, who became friends while in high school. They began making music together, and in the late 1980s, recorded their first tape, "Buck Naked," using a four-track recorder. By the time they released the Yellow Tape in 1991, they had expanded to a quartet with the addition of Tyler Stewart and Jim Creeggan. Although the Yellow Tape did not attract attention from major record labels, the band found commercial success through self-distribution, making them the first independent band in Canada to achieve platinum status with an independent release.

Their follow-up album, "Gordon," was released in 1992 and marked a breakthrough with iconic hits such as “If I Had $1,000,000” and “ Brian Wilson.” The band's popularity continued to grow with subsequent releases, including "Maybe You Should Drive" (1994) and "Born on a Pirate Ship" (1996). However, it was the 1998 album "Stunt" that propelled them into mainstream success, particularly with the number-one hit "One Week," which expanded their audience in the United States.

Following "Stunt," Barenaked Ladies released several more albums, including "Maroon" (2000), "Everything to Everyone" (2003), and "All in Good Time" (2010). The band has produced a variety of successful singles over the years, including “Pinch Me,” “It’s All Been Done,” and “Call and Answer,” showcasing their evolution from acoustic origins to a blend of pop, rock, and folk music.

Throughout their career, Barenaked Ladies has been nominated for numerous industry awards, winning a total of eleven. Their contributions to music extend beyond albums and performances; they are also recognized for creating the theme song for the popular American sitcom "The Big Bang Theory." The group's lively performances often feature comedic elements and freestyle rapping, enhancing their appeal to audiences.

In addition to their musical endeavors, the members of Barenaked Ladies are committed to environmental sustainability through the Barenaked Planet project. They strive to maintain a "green" approach during tours, utilizing recyclable materials and biodiesel fuel. This commitment underlines their desire to make a positive impact beyond the music industry.

As of 2013, the band continues to tour, perform, and record, with their latest album, "Grinning Streak," featuring the single "Boomerang."
