Bon Jovi is an American rock band formed in Sayreville, New Jersey in 1983. The band consists of singer Jon Bon Jovi, keyboardist David Bryan, drummer Tico Torres, guitarist Hugh McDonald, Phil X, and percussionist Everett Bradley. The band's original bassist Alec John Such left the band in 1994, and longtime guitarist and co-songwriter Richie Sambora left in 2013.
The band's history began in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when Jon Bon Jovi began performing music live with various bands. In 1984, Bon Jovi released their self-titled debut album, and its single "Runaway" managed to reach the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100.
Their breakthrough came with the album Slippery When Wet, released in 1986, which included three Top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, two of which reached No. 1: "You Give Love a Bad Name" and "Livin' on a Prayer". The album was a massive commercial success, selling over 28 million copies worldwide. 1988's New Jersey also reached number one on the Billboard 200 and included five Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100.
In the 1990s, Bon Jovi continued to tour and release new music. After several years of exploring different musical directions, the band returned with their platinum albums Have a Nice Day (2005) and Lost Highway (2007), which saw them incorporate elements of country music into some songs.
The album Lost Highway became Bon Jovi’s third number one album in the US. Its first single, "(You Want to) Make a Memory", peaked at number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100, the highest debut for Bon Jovi on the US charts. Later, the album reached number two in the UK and number one in Japan, Canada, Australia, and Europe.
In 2013, guitarist Richie Sambora left the band and was replaced by Phil X. In 2016, the band announced that they would be embarking on their "This House Is Not for Sale" tour.
Throughout their career, Bon Jovi has released 16 studio albums, five compilations, and three live albums. They have sold more than 130 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling American rock bands. The band has performed 2,700 concerts in 50 countries for 34 million fans, and has been inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame, and the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
In 2020 the band started on the This House is Not for Sale - European Tour, then later that year the Bon Jovi: 2020 Tour began, with a new setlist which included songs from their 2020 single, "Unbroken."
