He is best known for his stand-up comedy and notable roles in television series, particularly for playing Chief "Needles" Nelson on FX's "Rescue Me." Ferrara launched his comedy career through early appearances on popular late-night shows such as "The Late Show with David Letterman" and "The Tonight Show," which helped him gain recognition in the entertainment industry.

Following his initial success, Ferrara expanded into acting, landing roles on several television series, including "The Job," where he played Detective Tommy Manetti, and "Nurse Jackie," portraying NYPD Sgt.
