Opera singer and musician Sarah Brightman was born in 1960 in Berkhamsted, England. Her artistic journey began at the tender age of three when she started dancing. By thirteen, she had made her London theatrical debut in the production I and Albert, and soon after, she danced with the renowned group Pan’s People. However, her significant breakthrough came in 1981 when she was cast as Jemima in the iconic West End production of Cats. This role marked the beginning of a successful career in musical theater, including her memorable portrayal of Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera, solidifying her status as a leading performer.
In the late 1980s, Brightman ventured into solo recording, releasing a series of albums that showcased her versatility and musical range. Notable albums include The Trees They Grow So High (1988), The Songs That Got Away (1989), As I Came of Age (1990), Dive (1993), Fly (1995), Eden (1998), Luna (2000), Encore (2001), Harem (2003), Love Changes Everything: The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection, Vol. 2 (2005), and Diva: The Singles Collection (2006). Among her many successful tracks, her duet “Time to Say Goodbye” with Andrea Bocelli stands out as her signature song. Released in 1996, it became a colossal international hit, selling over twelve million copies worldwide and significantly expanding her fan base.
Brightman is known for her remarkable vocal range, which spans more than three octaves, and her performances in multiple languages, including English, Latin, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, French, and Spanish. This impressive linguistic versatility has helped her become one of the world’s best-selling sopranos, with album sales exceeding thirty million and over 200 gold and platinum records awarded across 38 countries. In 2010, she was recognized as the fifth most influential and best-selling classical artist of the 2000s in the United States by Billboard, further enhancing her esteemed reputation.
Beyond her commercial success, Brightman also has an illustrious performance history on some of the world’s biggest stages. She made history as the first artist invited to perform the theme song at the Olympic Games on two occasions. Her first appearance was at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, where she performed “Amigos Para Siempre” alongside Spanish tenor José Carreras, reaching an estimated global audience of one billion. Sixteen years later, in 2008, she sang “You and Me” with Chinese singer Liu Huan at the Beijing Olympics, captivating an audience of around four billion people.
In recognition of her commitment to humanitarian efforts, Brightman was appointed the UNESCO Artist for Peace for the period 2012–2014. This honor was bestowed upon her for promoting cultural dialogue and charitable causes throughout her artistic career. Additionally, since 2010, she has served as Panasonic's global brand ambassador, further showcasing her influence beyond the realm of music.
As she continues her musical journey, Brightman’s most recent album, Dreamchaser, was released in 2013, and she is currently in the studio working on her twelfth studio album, anticipated for release in late 2017 or early 2018. With her rich legacy and influence in both the classical and contemporary music scenes, Sarah Brightman remains a distinguished figure in the world of music and performance.
