Engelbert Humperdinck, born Arnold George Dorsey on May 2, 1936, in Madras, India, is a British pop singer renowned for his smooth ballads and captivating stage presence. Raised in Leicester, England, he began his musical journey at a young age, showcasing his talent on the saxophone by the age of eleven. Initially performing under the name "Gerry Dorsey" in the late 1950s, Humperdinck struggled to gain traction until a pivotal partnership with manager Gordon Mills in 1965 led to a dramatic transformation in his career, including adopting the stage name of the German composer Engelbert Humperdinck.
Humperdinck achieved international fame in 1967 with his single "Release Me," which became a massive success, selling over a million copies and topping the UK Singles Chart. This was followed by other significant hits, including "There Goes My Everything" and "The Last Waltz," which further solidified his place in the music industry. His powerful vocals and enigmatic presence garnered him a dedicated fanbase, with many supporters referring to themselves as "Humperdinckers." By the late 1960s, two of his singles were recognized among the best-selling in the UK.
Throughout the 1970s and 80s, Humperdinck continued to achieve success in North America, with notable hits such as "After the Lovin'" and "This Moment in Time." His career saw a resurgence during the 1990s lounge revival, with appearances in popular media, including the soundtrack for Beavis and Butt-Head Do America. He also released the Grammy-nominated gospel album, Always Hear the Harmony: The Gospel Sessions (2003), and a collaborative album, Engelbert Calling (2014), featuring duets with renowned artists.
In 2012, Humperdinck represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest with "Love Will Set You Free," finishing 25th out of 26. Over his career, he has sold over 140 million records worldwide, amassed multiple awards including Grammy accolades, and earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1989. His discography also includes the album The Man I Want to Be, released in late 2017, which featured original compositions alongside covers of contemporary hits by Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars.
Humperdinck remains active in the music industry, continually releasing new material, including a Christmas album, Warmest Christmas Wishes (2018), and a new studio album titled All About Love (2023). Recent projects include the song "You," which he performed in a music video as a tribute to his wife, and the EPs Reflections (2019), Sentiments (2020), and Regards (2021).
Even in his sixth decade as a performer, Humperdinck consistently engages with audiences through international tours across North America, Europe, Australia, and the Far East. He has graced numerous prestigious venues, including the Royal Albert Hall and London's Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. As of December 2023, he announced a "grand farewell tour" of Australia scheduled for May 2024, which includes a highly anticipated performance at the Sydney Opera House, showcasing his enduring legacy in the music world.
