Stevie Nicks, born in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1948, has become one of rock music’s most recognizable and successful voices, both as a solo artist and as a key member of Fleetwood Mac. Her musical journey began at an early age, performing at her parents' tavern when she was just four years old. As a teenager, she began writing songs and soon joined her first band, The Changing Times, while still in high school.
Before joining Fleetwood Mac, Nicks and her friend Lindsey Buckingham gained popularity with their band Fritz, which they formed during their high school years. Their joint efforts culminated in the release of Buckingham-Nicks, their debut album in 1973, which played a significant role in paving the way for Fleetwood Mac to emerge as one of the most iconic bands of the 1970s. Nicks’ unique blend of mystical lyrics and powerful vocals quickly made her a standout artist.
In 1981, after establishing herself with Fleetwood Mac, Nicks embarked on a successful solo career. Her first solo album, Bella Donna, soared to the top of the Billboard charts, solidifying her status as a solo powerhouse. She followed it with The Wild Heart, which produced notable hits like “Stand Back” and “Talk to Me.” Continuing her prolific output, Nicks released The Other Side of the Mirror in 1989 and her solo box set, Enchanted, in 1998. A compilation of her work, The Very Best of Stevie Nicks, was released in 2007 and reached number twenty-one on the Billboard 200.
In the new millennium, Nicks has remained active, releasing critical albums such as In Your Dreams in 2011 and 24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault in 2014. She also contributed a cover of “Not Fade Away” to the tribute album Listen to Me: Buddy Holly in 2011. Furthermore, her music experienced a resurgence when Glee, the popular television show, dedicated an episode to Fleetwood Mac’s album Rumors, exposing her work to a new generation. The renewed interest led to Rumors re-entering the Billboard 200 concurrently with the debut of In Your Dreams.
Nicks has earned numerous accolades throughout her career, including being named the "Reigning Queen of Rock and Roll" by Rolling Stone after her first solo album and being ranked among the 100 Greatest Songwriters and Singers of All Time. The songs "Landslide," "Rhiannon," and "Dreams" from Fleetwood Mac, along with her solo hit "Edge of Seventeen," have all been included in Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
In recognition of her significant contributions to music, Nicks made history as the first woman to be inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, first as a member of Fleetwood Mac in 1998 and again as a solo artist in 2019. Her work has garnered eight Grammy Award nominations and two American Music Awards nominations. The albums Fleetwood Mac, Rumours, and Bella Donna are prominently featured in Billboard's list of the Greatest of All Time Billboard 200 Albums, with Rumours also being celebrated as one of the greatest albums in rock history.
Most recently, in 2017, Nicks performed alongside Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers at the British Summer Time festival and collaborated with The Pretenders for the 24 Karat Gold Tour, further showcasing her lasting influence and passion for music. As she continues to captivate audiences around the world, Stevie Nicks remains an enduring symbol of artistry and strength in the music industry.
