Heather Headley, born on October 5, 1974, in Trinidad, is a celebrated Trinidadian-American singer, songwriter, record producer, and actress renowned for her extensive contributions to musical theater and the music industry. Raised in a religious household as the daughter of a pastor, her family relocated to Fort Wayne, Indiana, when she was fifteen, following her father's appointment to a local church. Heather's early life was rich with artistic expression, as she actively participated in her church choir and the drama and music programs at Northrop High School, where she showcased her talents in performances like Fanny Brice in Funny Girl.
Upon completing her high school education, Heather enrolled at Northwestern University, where she pursued a dual focus in communications and musical theater. However, driven by an opportunity to jumpstart her acting career, she made the bold decision to leave college during her junior year and join the original Toronto cast of Ragtime. This pivotal moment led her to Broadway, where she took on the iconic role of Nala in Disney's The Lion King in 1997. Her acclaimed performance in this role opened the door for her to star as the title character in Aida, earning her the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 2000.
In addition to her theatrical success, Heather Headley has made significant strides in music. She released her debut album, This Is Who I Am, in 2002, which received Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Building on her initial success, she followed up with In My Mind in 2006, which featured the hit title track that soared to number one on the Dance/Club charts. In 2009, her third album, Audience of One, earned her a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album, solidifying her as both an R&B artist and a gospel performer.
Throughout her illustrious career, Headley has collaborated with esteemed artists, showcasing her versatility across genres. Noteworthy performances include her participation in Andrea Bocelli's Christmas tour in 2009 and a memorable duet with Josh Groban during the We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial in 2008. In 2012, she starred in the London stage production of The Bodyguard, based on the hit 1992 film, which garnered her an Olivier Award nomination, further cementing her reputation in musical theater.
In addition to her professional achievements, Heather Headley is a devoted family woman. She married Brian Musso, whom she met at Northwestern University, in 2003. Together, they have three children: John David, born in 2009; Jordan Chase, born in 2014; and a daughter welcomed in 2019. Despite her busy career, Heather remains deeply connected to her faith, often performing with the Vertical Church Band, which allows her to combine her love for music and spirituality.
