Randy Newman was born in 1943 in Los Angeles into a family deeply rooted in the music industry, with several uncles鈥擫ionel, Alfred, and Emil Newman鈥攚ho were successful film composers. Newman began his songwriting career at the tender age of seventeen, penning hits for renowned acts like the Fleetwoods, Cilla Black, Gene Pitney, and the Alan Price Set. Although he briefly attended UCLA, it was his connection to music that became his main focus after signing with Reprise Records.
Newman's self-titled debut album was released in 1968, marking the start of a consistently evolving career. Over the years, he built a reputation not only as a solo artist but also as a highly talented songwriter. His discography expanded to include various albums such as 12 Songs (1970), Sail Away (1972), and Good Old Boys (1974). Four of his non-soundtrack albums鈥擲ail Away, Good Old Boys, Little Criminals, and Harps and Angels鈥攎anaged to chart in the US top 40, showcasing the commercial viability of his music.
While Newman's studio albums achieved moderate success, it was his work in film scoring that brought him significant recognition and acclaim. He began his career as a film composer with Cold Turkey in 1971, but it was his contributions to films like Ragtime (1981) that earned him two Academy Award nominations. His memorable song 鈥淵ou鈥檝e Got a Friend鈥 for Toy Story further solidified his status, gaining him another Oscar nomination.
Newman went on to score multiple box office hits for Disney and Pixar, including follow-ups in the Toy Story franchise and other favorites like A Bug's Life, Monsters, Inc., Cars, and The Princess and the Frog. His extensive filmography also includes scores for films such as Seabiscuit, Awakenings, and Pleasantville, earning him yet more nominations and accolades. In television, he composed for the series Monk, producing the Emmy-winning theme "When I鈥檓 Gone."
Throughout his distinguished career, Randy Newman has been nominated for twenty-two Academy Awards in categories for Best Original Score and Best Original Song, winning twice for "We Belong Together" from Toy Story 3 and "If I Didn鈥檛 Have You" from Monsters, Inc. His remarkable contributions to music have also earned him three Emmy Awards and seven Grammy Awards, alongside recognition as a Disney Legend.
Newman continues to perform and compose actively, having released his most recent studio album, Dark Matter, in 2017. He also scored The Meyerowitz Stories that same year. His influence and legacy in the music industry have been recognized by honors such as his induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. With a career that spans decades, Randy Newman remains a pivotal figure in both songwriting and film scoring.
