Randy Newman was born in 1943 in Los Angeles into a family deeply rooted in the music industry, with several uncles鈥擫ionel, Alfred, and Emil Newman鈥攚ho were successful film composers. Newman began his songwriting career at the tender age of seventeen, penning hits for renowned acts like the Fleetwoods, Cilla Black, Gene Pitney, and the Alan Price Set. Although he briefly attended UCLA, it was his connection to music that became his main focus after signing with Reprise Records.

Newman's self-titled debut album was released in 1968, marking the start of a consistently evolving career. Over the years, he built a reputation not only as a solo artist but also as a highly talented songwriter. His discography expanded to include various albums such as 12 Songs (1970), Sail Away (1972), and Good Old Boys (1974).
