Jars of Clay, a Christian rock band that emerged from Nashville, Tennessee in the early 1990s, rose to prominence with their breakout hit “Flood” in 1995. Founded by Matthew Odmark, Stephen Mason, Charlie Lowell, and Dan Haseltine, the band captured the attention of Essential Records after submitting a demo for a talent competition. Their eponymous debut album, which included the now-iconic single "Flood," quickly climbed the mainstream charts, becoming one of the most successful hits by a Christian band on a Christian label, and helped propel the album to multi-platinum status.
Following the success of “Flood,” Jars of Clay continued to create music that resonated with audiences. They have released ten acclaimed albums, including Much Afraid (1997), If I Left the Zoo (1999), The Eleventh Hour (2002), Who We Are Instead (2003), Redemption Songs (2005), Good Monsters (2006), Christmas Songs (2007), The Long Fall Back to Earth (2009), and The Shelter (2010). While “Flood” remains their most notable mainstream hit, other singles like “Truce,” “Fade to Grey,” “Overjoyed,” and “Show You Love” have also garnered attention within the Christian music community.
The band has won three Grammy Awards corresponding to their first three albums, alongside multiple GMA Dove Awards, reflecting their impact on contemporary Christian music. They have established themselves as a consistent force in the industry, continuing to perform and release music well into the new millennium. The Shelter, released on October 5, 2010, featured eleven tracks, and as part of their promotional strategy, the band streamed the entire album on their website prior to its release.
In early 2011, Jars of Clay toured the United States as part of the Rock And Worship Roadshow, sharing the stage with artists like MercyMe. The band entered the studio again in July 2012 to record Inland, which was released on August 27, 2013. This album showcased their continued evolution, featuring tracks such as “After the Fight” and “Inland,” with the latter being available for free download via Rolling Stone’s website. They also offered exclusive releases like "Love in Hard Times," which was included with their EP Under the Weather (Live in Sellersville, PA).
While Jars of Clay's group activities have been somewhat limited in recent years, as of 2022, each member has pursued individual projects while still maintaining a connection through music. They collaborated with the pop group SHEL for a Christmas concert in Nashville, which led to the creation of a six-song EP titled A Family Christmas, featuring four original songs. Additionally, the band contributed a track to There's a Rainbow Somewhere, a tribute album to artist Randy Stonehill, affirming their commitment to honoring their roots and collaborating with peers.
Despite the shifts in focus among its members, Jars of Clay remains a respected and influential entity in the Christian rock genre, celebrated for their thoughtful lyrics and melodic compositions. Their ability to span generations and musical landscapes continues to endear them to fans, while their legacy of impactful music endures in the hearts of listeners worldwide.
