William "Smokey" Robinson Jr. (born February 19, 1940) is an influential American R&B and soul singer, songwriter, and record producer, best known as the founder and frontman of the pioneering Motown vocal group, The Miracles. He led the group from its inception in 1955, initially known as The Five Chimes, until 1972 when he retired to become the vice president of Motown Records. During his time with The Miracles, Robinson served as the chief songwriter and producer, contributing to hits such as "Shop Around" and "Tears of a Clown," which helped define the Motown sound.
Robinson's collaboration with Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. was pivotal in the success of both men, as they mutually influenced each other's careers. Under Robinson's leadership, The Miracles produced numerous chart-topping singles that not only showcased his songwriting skills but also contributed to Motown's rise as a dominant force in popular music. After leaving The Miracles, Robinson embarked on a solo career, achieving further success with songs like "Being with You" and "Cruisin’."
His contributions to music have been recognized with multiple honors. Robinson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 1989. He has also been awarded honorary doctorates from Howard University and the Berklee College of Music.
The Miracles, under Robinson's leadership, were also recognized in 2009 with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, reflecting their significant contributions to music. Robinson attended the ceremony alongside original members of the group, further highlighting the group's historical importance.
In addition to his past achievements, Robinson remains active in the music industry. His 2014 album, *Smokey & Friends*, features collaborations with various artists, showcasing his continued presence in contemporary music. Robinson's work continues to resonate across generations, affirming his status as a key figure in the evolution of R&B and soul music.
