Andrew Carmellini is a prominent American chef and restaurateur, born in 1971 in Ohio. His passion for the culinary arts began at a young age, as he started experimenting with flavors in his family kitchen when he was just fourteen years old. After completing his studies at the Culinary Institute of America, Carmellini launched his professional career by working in various Italian restaurants in New York City. He later traveled to Italy to further immerse himself in the region's cuisine, enhancing his culinary skills and knowledge.
In the mid-1990s, Carmellini broadened his focus to include French cuisine, securing positions at notable establishments such as Le Cirque and Caf? Boulud in New York City. At Caf? Boulud, he spent six years honing his craft and garnered significant acclaim, including a three-star rating from The New York Times. This recognition positioned him as a rising star in the culinary scene, and he went on to establish his own restaurants, notably A Voce and Locanda Verde. Locanda Verde, an Italian taverna located in Robert De Niro?? Greenwich Hotel, opened in 2009 and further solidified his reputation as a leading chef.
In 2013, Carmellini expanded his restaurant portfolio with the opening of The Lafayette in New York's NoHo neighborhood. Today, he is responsible for the food and drink operations at fifteen restaurants, bars, and food stands under his partnership with NoHo Hospitality. His work has earned him numerous accolades, including recognition as one of Food & Wine?? Best New Chefs, a James Beard Rising Star Chef award, and a Michelin star.
Carmellini is also an accomplished author, having co-written two cookbooks with his wife, Gwen Hyman. The books are titled Urban Italian: True Stories and Simple Recipes from a Life in Food (2008) and American Flavor (2011), reflecting his culinary journey and personal experiences in the kitchen.
Throughout his career, he has maintained a visible presence in the culinary community, participating in high-profile interviews and public appearances that showcase his expertise and passion for food.
