The Blues Brothers, formally known as The Fabulous Blues Brothers and later as The Blues Brothers Show Band and Revue, are an iconic American blues and soul revue band founded in 1978 by comedians Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi. The duo's journey began as original cast members of Saturday Night Live, where they quickly formed a close bond and shared a passionate interest in blues music, which inspired them to create their unforgettable act. Belushi, born in Chicago, initially broke into comedy by joining a local troupe, while Aykroyd, a Canadian, honed his craft in various nightclubs before finding fame on SNL.
In forming The Blues Brothers, Belushi took on the role of "Joliet" Jake Blues, the lead vocalist, while Aykroyd embodied Elwood Blues, the harmonica player who famously carried his instrument in a briefcase handcuffed to his wrist. They donned matching black suits, trilby hats, and sunglasses, establishing a striking visual aesthetic for the band. Their ensemble included talented musicians such as Steve "The Colonel" Cropper, Donald "Duck" Dunn, Matt "Guitar" Murphy, "Blue" Lou Marini, Tom "Bones" Malone, and Alan "Mr. Fabulous" Rubin, many of whom were pulled from the Saturday Night Live band.
The Blues Brothers debuted as musical guests on SNL on April 22, 1978, hosted by comedian Steve Martin. Following this performance, they opened for Martin during a residency at the Universal Amphitheatre in September 1978, leading to the recording of their first album, Briefcase Full of Blues, which was released on November 28, 1978. The live album quickly rose to the top of the charts, achieving platinum sales, and set the stage for the group’s burgeoning fame. They later opened for the Grateful Dead during their final concert at the Winterland Arena, further solidifying their popularity.
In 1980, the band expanded their horizons with the release of The Blues Brothers film, which showcased their music and comedic talents, propelling them to mainstream success. Tragically, in 1982, John Belushi passed away from an accidental drug overdose, casting a shadow over the band's future; however, The Blues Brothers persevered by utilizing guest singers and rotating band members, demonstrating resilience in the face of loss.
In 1998, the group reformed for a world tour, leading to the release of Blues Brothers 2000, a sequel to the original film. As part of the film's promotion, Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi's brother Jim made a memorable appearance at the halftime show for Super Bowl XXXI, accompanied by musical legends James Brown, John Goodman, and ZZ Top. The band's legacy was further celebrated with the premiere of The Blues Brothers Revival musical in Chicago in 2004, which featured a storyline about Elwood's attempts to rescue Jake from limbo.
In 2011, Dan Aykroyd, along with Judith Belushi Pisano, John Belushi's widow, began developing a concept for a new Blues Brothers television series, indicating the enduring appeal of the beloved act. Through their innovative blend of music and comedy, The Blues Brothers have emerged as the most successful blues revue act of all time, leaving an indelible mark on both the music and entertainment industries.
