Stevland Hardaway Morris, known professionally as Stevie Wonder, was born on May 13, 1950, in Saginaw, Michigan. Blind since shortly after birth, Wonder became a child prodigy in music, signing with Motown's Tamla label at the age of 11. He achieved his first major hit with “Fingertips (Pt. 2)” when he was just thirteen, making him the youngest solo artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart. By 1970, his burgeoning career was solidified with additional successes including “For Once in My Life,” “My Cherie Amour,” and “Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours.”
The early 1970s marked the beginning of Wonder’s "classic period," characterized by a series of groundbreaking albums. In 1972, he released Music of My Mind, followed by Talking Book, which featured the iconic single “Superstition.” His success continued with album releases such as Innervisions—home to hits like “Living for the City” and “Higher Ground”—and Songs in the Key of Life, each accumulating multiple Grammys. By the time he released Hotter than July in 1980, Stevie Wonder had firmly established himself as a music superstar, with a distinctive sound that reshaped the conventions of contemporary R&B.
Stevie Wonder's influence extended beyond his remarkable music career. In the new millennium, he contributed to significant historical events, delivering moving performances at various memorials and benefit concerts. He sang "They Won’t Go When I Go" and "Never Dreamed You’d Leave in Summer" at Michael Jackson's memorial in 2009, performed "Bridge over Troubled Water" for Hope for Haiti Now in 2010, and took part in the opening ceremony of the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens in 2011. In 2012, he honored fellow musician Etta James at her funeral alongside Christina Aguilera.
With album sales exceeding 100 million, Stevie Wonder is recognized as one of the best-selling music artists of all time. His impressive body of work includes nearly forty albums and more than thirty Top Ten hits. Wonder has received numerous accolades, including 25 Grammy Awards—the most by any male solo artist—and one Academy Award for Best Original Song for “I Just Called to Say I Love You” from The Woman in Red. His contributions have earned him a place in the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Notably, Wonder’s recognition extends to his philanthropic efforts and political activism, including his campaign to establish Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday as a federal holiday in the United States. He was named a United Nations Messenger of Peace in 2009, advocating for humanitarian causes and social justice. His influence was further acknowledged when he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama in 2014.
Over the years, Rolling Stone has repeatedly recognized Wonder as one of the greatest artists in rock history. In 2004, he was named one of the 100 Greatest Rock and Roll Artists of All Time, reaffirming his monumental impact on music. As a pioneering musician and a voice for social change, Stevie Wonder continues to inspire generations of artists and fans alike.
Stevie Wonder's enduring legacy is a testament to his innovative spirit and the timeless quality of his music, securing his place as an iconic figure in the annals of music history.
