Deborah Ann Harry, born Angela Trimble on July 1, 1945, in Miami, Florida, is an American singer, songwriter, and actress best known as the lead vocalist of the iconic band Blondie. Raised in Hawthorne, New Jersey, after being adopted as an infant, she explored various roles in her early career including a go-go dancer, Playboy Bunny, and secretary. In the late 1960s, Harry began establishing her musical voice, leading to the formation of Blondie in 1974, which would catapult her to stardom.
Blondie's self-titled debut album was released in 1976, paving the way for a string of successful albums, including the groundbreaking Parallel Lines (1978) and Autoamerican (1980). The band’s innovative fusion of punk, disco, and new wave sounds led to numerous chart-topping hits, including “Heart of Glass,” “Call Me,” and “The Tide Is High.” Under Harry's charismatic leadership, Blondie became one of the most influential bands of the late 1970s and early 1980s, with four songs reaching No. 1 on the US charts between 1979 and 1981.
In 1981, Harry launched her solo career with the album KooKoo, produced by Nile Rodgers, though it did not achieve the expected success. After a brief hiatus, she released Rockbird in 1986 and Def, Dumb & Blonde shortly afterward, both receiving moderate success. During this time, she also ventured into acting, adopting the name “Deborah Harry” for her roles. Her cinematic appearances included notable films such as Hairspray (1988) and Videodrome (1983), further establishing her presence in the entertainment industry.
The late 1990s saw a reunion of Blondie, resulting in the release of No Exit in 1999, which marked the band’s return to the music scene after a significant hiatus. Following this, The Curse of Blondie was released in 2003, and Harry continued to embody a dual career as both a solo artist and band member. She also engaged in various collaborative projects, including appearances on albums by artists like Fall Out Boy and touring with other musicians.
VH1 ranked her as the twelfth greatest woman of rock and roll, and she has consistently remained active in both music and acting. Recent endeavors included her participation in the Coachella music festival alongside Arcade Fire in 2014 and a more recent appearance with Blondie at the same festival in 2023. In addition, her memoir, Face It, was published in 2019, providing insight into her remarkable career.
Her latest collaborations include contributions to the Dandy Warhols and NALA in 2023, showcasing her musical versatility and ongoing relevance. With a career spanning over five decades, Harry remains a symbol of enduring creativity and influence in both the music and entertainment worlds.
