Bruce Randall Hornsby was born on November 23, 1954, in Williamsburg, Virginia. He is an American singer-songwriter and pianist known for his eclectic musical style, which draws from folk rock, jazz, bluegrass, and other genres.
Hornsby's early life and education were shaped by his family's musical background. His father was an attorney and musician, and his mother was a pianist and church community liaison. He has two brothers, Robert Saunier "Bobby" Hornsby, a realtor and musician, and John Hornsby, an engineer and songwriter.
Hornsby attended James Blair High School in Williamsburg, where he played basketball and was chosen by his senior class as most likely to succeed. He then studied music at the University of Richmond, Berklee College of Music, and the University of Miami, graduating in 1977.
In the early 1980s, Hornsby played with his brother Bobby's band, Bobby Hi-Test and the Octane Kids, performing covers of Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers Band songs. After moving to Los Angeles with his brother John, they spent three years writing for 20th Century Fox and then worked as session musicians.
In 1984, Hornsby formed Bruce Hornsby and the Range, which included David Mansfield, George Marinelli, Joe Puerta, and John Molo. The band's biggest hit was "The Way It Is," which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1986. The album was certified multi-platinum and included other hits like "Mandolin Rain" and "Every Little Kiss."
Hornsby's music evolved in the late 1980s and early 1990s, incorporating jazz and bluegrass elements. He performed at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in 1989 and reworked his hit "The Valley Road" with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. In February 1990, the song won Best Bluegrass Recording at the 32nd Annual Grammy Awards.
Hornsby toured with the Grateful Dead from 1988 until Jerry Garcia's death in 1995, playing more than 100 shows with the band. He became a regular fixture in the touring lineup after Brent Mydland's death in July 1990 and played piano (and frequently accordion) at many gigs. Hornsby's friendship with Jerry Garcia continued outside of the band, and they collaborated on several album and live projects.
Throughout his career, Hornsby has worked with a variety of musicians, including Don Henley, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan, and Stevie Nicks. He has released several solo albums and continues to tour and record with his band Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers. In recent years, he has been involved in Grateful Dead-related projects, including Bob Weir's Ratdog and Mickey Hart's solo projects.
