Carly Elisabeth Simon, born on June 25, 1945, in New York City, is an acclaimed American musician, singer, songwriter, and author. Raised in an artistic environment, she is the daughter of the co-founder of Simon & Schuster, a gifted pianist, and a talented vocalist. This nurturing background ignited her lifelong passion for music and the arts, shaping the course of her career as both a performer and a prolific songwriter.
Simon began her musical journey in the early 1960s alongside her sister, Lucy, in the duo known as the Simon Sisters. Their memorable song “Winkin', Blinkin' and Nod” achieved minor success, reaching No. 73 on the Billboard Hot 100. After the duo disbanded, Carly transitioned to a solo career, and her self-titled debut album released in 1971 featured the hit “That's the Way I’ve Always Heard It Should Be,” leading to her Grammy Award for Best New Artist and establishing her as a formidable voice in music.
Her third album, No Secrets (1972), catapulted Simon to international fame, featuring the iconic hit "You're So Vain," which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks. The album itself reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and earned Simon multiple Grammy nominations. Following this success, she released Hotcakes (1974) and Playing Possum (1975), solidifying her place in the music industry with hits like "Mockingbird" and "Haven't Got Time for the Pain."
Simon continued to build on her success throughout the late 1970s, notably recording "Nobody Does It Better" for the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me in 1977. This song became a defining hit of her career and highlighted her talent for crafting memorable film soundtracks. In the 1980s, she wrote and performed several notable film themes, including “Coming Around Again” for Heartburn and the Academy Award-winning “Let the River Run” from Working Girl.
Over the decades, Simon's career has garnered numerous accolades, including two Grammy Awards and an induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1994. She remains known for her confessional style of songwriting, which resonated deeply with listeners and helped define the singer-songwriter movement of the 1970s. Notably, an enduring classic, "You're So Vain," was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2004.
Simon's discography is rich with critical and commercial success, featuring 24 Billboard Hot 100-charting singles and numerous Top 40 hits. Beyond music, she is also an accomplished author, having released two memoirs and five children's books. Her autobiography, Boys in the Trees: A Memoir, published in 2015, further explores her life and career, enriching her fans' understanding of the artist behind the music.
In recent years, Simon has continued to perform, including a notable collaboration with Taylor Swift during Swift's Red Tour in 2013, where they sang "You're So Vain." Her influence on the music industry remains impactful, and she continues to draw new fans while maintaining a dedicated following. Carly Simon's legacy as one of the quintessential singer-songwriters endures, ensuring that her timeless songs continue to resonate with audiences around the world.
