Arrested Development is recognized as one of the pioneering hip hop groups, emerging in the late 1980s as an antidote to the growing popularity of gangsta rap. Founded by rapper and producer Todd Thomas, known as Speech, and turntablist Timothy Barnwell, known as Headliner, Arrested Development sought to create music with a positive message that resonated with a broader audience.
The group achieved significant commercial success with their debut album, "3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life Of...", released in 1992. The album reached number one in the Village Voice's Pazz and Jop Critics' Poll and included notable tracks such as "People Everyday," "Mr. Wendal," "Ease My Mind," and "Tennessee," the latter of which is recognized by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. Arrested Development's contributions earned them two Grammy Awards in 1993 for Best New Artist and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group, marking them as the first hip hop group to win the Best New Artist award.
Following their auspicious debut, Arrested Development released "Unplugged" in 1993 and "Zingalamaduni" in 1994, but subsequently took a hiatus until the early 2000s. They returned with the album "Da Feelin?" in 2000, followed by several more releases, including "Heroes of the Harvest" (2002), "Extended Revolution" (2003), and "Among the Trees" (2004). In 2006, they released "Since the Last Time", which was also well-received.
In addition to their music career, Arrested Development has maintained a commitment to social causes. In 2008, they performed at The Concert for Peace in Israel, aiming to promote harmony between Palestinians and Israelis. They also engaged in a meaningful visit to a California women's prison to support domestic violence survivor Debbie Peagler, which was documented in the film "Crime After Crime".
The group continued to release new music throughout the 2010s, including the albums "Strong" (2010) and "Standing at the Crossroads" (2012), as well as a collection of new material in "Craft & Optics" in late 2018. In 2019, they were recognized with an award from Black Music Honors for their contributions to African-American music.
As of December 11, 2023, Arrested Development released the single "Hip Hop Saves Lives," featuring Chuck D and Grandmaster Caz, produced by Configa. The group remains active in both performing and producing music, continuing to have a significant impact on the hip hop landscape and beyond.
