Diana Jean Krall, born on November 16, 1964, in Nanaimo, British Columbia, is a celebrated Canadian jazz pianist and vocalist renowned for her rich contralto voice. Her musical journey began at the tender age of four when she started learning piano. With a keen interest in jazz, she quickly made a name for herself by performing locally during her teenage years. After honing her skills at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Krall moved to California, where she dedicated several years to perfecting her craft, eventually returning to Canada in the early 1990s to launch her professional career.
In 1993, Krall released her debut album, Stepping Out, which received critical acclaim and set the stage for her future success. This was followed by a string of successful albums, including Only Trust Your Heart (1995), Love Scenes (1997), and When I Look in Your Eyes (1999). Her 1996 album, All for You: A Dedication to the Nat King Cole Trio, not only earned her a Grammy nomination but also spent an impressive seventy weeks at the top of the jazz charts. Over the years, Krall has consistently produced acclaimed jazz records, reaffirming her status as one of the genre's leading figures.
Diana Krall's collaborations have further enriched her musical repertoire. She has worked with luminaries such as Paul McCartney on Kisses on the Bottom (2012) and Barbra Streisand for Love Is the Answer (2009). Additionally, her music has been featured in films like The Score (2001), and she has made cameo appearances as a performer in several movies, including At First Sight (1999) and Public Enemies (2009). Her artistic contributions have garnered multiple award nominations, including categories for Best Jazz Vocal Performance and Best Jazz Vocal Album.
Throughout her illustrious career, Krall has sold over 15 million albums globally, with more than six million sold in the United States alone. Remarkably, she is the only jazz artist to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart, solidifying her as one of the best-selling jazz musicians to date. Krall has won two Grammy Awards and eight Juno Awards, along with nine gold, three platinum, and seven multi-platinum albums, underscoring her widespread acclaim.
In 2017, she released her thirteenth studio album, Turn Up the Quiet, which won a Juno Award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year in 2018. The following year, she collaborated with Tony Bennett on the album Love Is Here to Stay, which features the song "Fascinating Rhythm," originally recorded by Bennett in 1949. This collaboration earned Bennett a Guinness World Record for the longest time between the release of an original recording and a re-recording of the same song by the same artist.
In September 2020, Krall released her sixteenth studio album, This Dream of You, which featured a selection of previously unreleased recordings made with her longtime producer Tommy LiPuma. The album included the jazz standard "Autumn in New York," and a video was created to raise awareness for New York Cares, enhancing her commitment to supporting community initiatives.
As she continues to tour, including her 2024 tour alongside musicians Sebastian Steinberg and Matt Chamberlain, Diana Krall remains a vital force in the jazz world, captivating audiences with her masterful piano skills and distinctive vocal delivery. Her contributions not only enrich the jazz genre but also establish her as an enduring artist with a remarkable legacy.
