Chris Botti, born Christopher Stephen Botti on October 12, 1962, in Portland, Oregon, is an acclaimed American trumpeter and composer. Raised primarily in Corvallis, Oregon, Botti spent two formative years living in Italy, where his exposure to a variety of musical styles influenced his later work. Coming from a musical family, with a classically trained pianist for a mother, he began playing the trumpet while still in grade school, setting the stage for a prolific musical career.
At the age of seventeen, Botti completed his high school requirements at Mount Hood Community College, choosing this route to free up time for performing at local clubs. This decision proved advantageous, as the connections he made at the college were instrumental in his early career. He went on to attend Indiana University, where he studied jazz and trumpet under the guidance of David Baker. During his studies, he received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to study with jazz greats George Coleman and Woody Shaw in New York.
Botti's initial professional success came as a sought-after session player, collaborating with legendary artists such as Aretha Franklin and Bob Dylan. In 1990, he joined Paul Simon’s band, a role he maintained until he released his solo debut album, First Wish, in 1995. The album marked the beginning of his transition from a session musician to a recognized solo artist in the music industry.
Following his debut, Botti expanded his discography with a series of successful solo albums, including Midnight Without You (1997), Slowing Down the World (1999), Night Sessions (2001), and A Thousand Kisses Deep (2003). His 2004 album, When I Fall in Love, leaned towards a more traditional sound, while To Love Again: The Duets (2005) showcased his ability to blend lush orchestral jazz with various guest vocalists. Botti's 2006 PBS special, Chris Botti Live: With Orchestra and Special Guests, further cemented his reputation as a prominent performer.
In 2007, Botti released Italia, an album that highlighted his Italian heritage and included tracks such as “Estate” and “Venice.” The collaboration with Andrea Bocelli on the title track received widespread acclaim and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Instrumental Album. Botti continued to garner recognition for his work, receiving three Grammy nominations in 2010 for his live album, Chris Botti in Boston, which featured performances with notable artists like Yo-Yo Ma and Steven Tyler.
Botti's ability to blend jazz and pop has made him a versatile musician, earning him a Grammy Award in 2013 for Best Pop Instrumental Album for his album Impressions. Throughout his career, he has reached significant commercial success, with four of his albums hitting the No. 1 position on the Billboard jazz albums chart. His music has been described as smooth jazz, though critics have noted that his work often transcends typical genre boundaries.
Most recently, Botti released Great Performances: The Chris Botti Band in Concert in 2018 on PBS, showcasing his talents alongside distinguished musicians. In 2023, he announced his upcoming debut album with Blue Note Records titled Vol. 1, with the lead single "Old Folks" released on August 18, 2023. Botti continues to be a prominent figure in contemporary music, known for his innovative fusion of genres and engaging performances.
