Neil Sedaka, born on March 13, 1939, in Brooklyn, New York, is a celebrated American singer, songwriter, and pianist whose music career began in 1957. Displaying early musical talent, Sedaka's working-class parents made sacrifices to provide him with a second-hand piano for lessons. His dedication paid off when he earned a piano scholarship to the prestigious Juilliard School of Music, where he trained for a career in music. Despite his parents’ wishes for him to embrace classical music, Sedaka gravitated towards pop music, leading him to collaborate with lyricist Howard Greenfield, with whom he composed numerous songs.
After forming a band with high school classmates, Sedaka became a founding member of the doo-wop group The Tokens, which enjoyed several hits in the 1950s, including "While I Dream" and the iconic “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” Following his time with the group, he launched a successful solo career, scoring hits like "Laura Lee," "Ring-a-Rockin'," and "Oh, Delilah!" These early successes laid the groundwork for what would become a prolific string of albums throughout his career.
Sedaka's discography is extensive, featuring notable albums such as Rock with Sedaka (1959), Smile (1965), Oh! Carol (1970), Laughter in the Rain (1974), and Neil Sedaka’s Greatest Hits (1977). His hit singles from this era include classics like "Calendar Girl" (1960), "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" (1962), and "Laughter in the Rain" (1974). Though his popularity waned in the mid-1960s, Sedaka experienced a notable resurgence in the 1970s, achieving two Billboard Hot 100 number ones with "Laughter in the Rain" and "Bad Blood."
By the mid-1980s, Sedaka's recording contract ended, but he adapted by establishing his own music publishing company, allowing him to finance new recordings and the re-release of his classic albums on CD. In 2007, he signed a new recording contract with Razor and Tie Records, resulting in The Definitive Collection, a compilation that marked a significant milestone in his career as it debuted at number twenty-five on the charts. This was followed by Waking Up is Hard to Do (2009), a children's album that reimagined his beloved melodies for a younger audience.
Continuing to evolve as an artist, Sedaka released The Music of My Life in 2010, which featured all-new material and showcased his enduring songwriting talent. He has also remained active in performance, demonstrating his lasting appeal by engaging with audiences worldwide. A notable concert in 2016 took place in the Florida retirement community The Villages, where he performed to a sold-out crowd.
Throughout his career, Sedaka has collaborated with numerous artists, contributing to his broad influence in the music industry. He has performed duets with notable singers like Elaine Paige and Engelbert Humperdinck, as well as featuring on Steve Tyrell's 2015 album. Additionally, his participation in various musical projects reflects his adaptability and relevance in the ever-changing landscape of music.
Today, Neil Sedaka continues to create and perform. In 2020, he embraced digital platforms by launching a series of free mini-concerts on social media to entertain fans during the COVID-19 pandemic, further demonstrating his commitment to connecting with audiences across generations. With a legacy spanning decades and an extensive catalog of over 500 songs co-written with collaborators like Howard Greenfield and Phil Cody, Sedaka remains a beloved figure in American pop music.
