Ashanti, born Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas, rose to prominence with the release of her self-titled debut album in 2002. The album's lead single, "Foolish," achieved commercial success, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 despite receiving mixed critical reviews. The track earned triple platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and won Best Contemporary R&B Album at the 45th Annual Grammy Awards. Additionally, it spawned two other top-40 hits, "Happy" and "Baby." Ashanti contributed background vocals and co-wrote Jennifer Lopez's 2002 single "Ain't It Funny (Murder Remix)," which also reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100.
Following her debut, Ashanti released her second album, Chapter II, in 2003. This album also achieved platinum certification by the RIAA and reached number one on the Billboard 200, receiving three nominations at the 46th Annual Grammy Awards. Its lead singles, "Rock wit U (Awww Baby)" and "Rain on Me," peaked at numbers two and seven on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively. That same year, she released a Christmas album, Ashanti's Christmas, but it was met with a decline in both critical review and commercial performance.
In 2004, Ashanti released her fourth studio album, Concrete Rose, which debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200, despite receiving mixed reviews. The lead single, "Only U," became her most successful song in the UK, peaking at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album's second single, "Don't Let Them," faced challenges due to legal issues involving her label, Murder Inc. Her fifth album, The Declaration, was released in 2008 and received moderate reception, marking her final project with a major label. In 2014, Ashanti released her sixth album, Braveheart, independently, and throughout her career, she has sold nearly 30 million records worldwide.
In addition to her music career, Ashanti has pursued acting, making her film debut in Coach Carter (2005) and starring in the television special The Muppets' Wizard of Oz, which drew nearly eight million viewers. She appeared in the films John Tucker Must Die (2006) and Resident Evil: Extinction (2007). In recent years, she has continued to collaborate with various artists and projects, announcing in 2015 that she was working on new music for her seventh album.
Ashanti's 2015 collaboration with Michelle Obama for the #Let'sMove campaign produced the song "Let's Go," aimed at promoting water consumption. She further collaborated with Canadian singer Belly on the track "Seven Day Love" in 2016, and contributed to The Hamilton Mixtape, interpreting Broadway songs alongside several notable artists. In 2017, she announced plans for her seventh album, initially set for release in 2018, and later confirmed future projects in collaboration with rapper Ja Rule.
Throughout 2017 and 2018, Ashanti returned to music with several collaborations, including the single "Say Less" with Ty Dolla Sign and features on songs by Machel Montano and Lil Wayne. Her collaboration with Afro B, "Pretty Little Thing," was released in August 2019, and she also produced and featured on the soundtrack of the film Stuck. In late 2019, Ashanti guest-starred as herself in Dynasty, further showcasing her multifaceted career.
In January 2021, Ashanti released the single "2:35 (I Want You)." The following March, her hit "Rock wit U (Awww Baby)" was sampled in British rapper Aitch's single "Baby." In October 2022, she contributed to Diddy's remix of "Gotta Move On," and in February 2024, she was featured on Jermaine Dupri's single "This Lil' Game We Play," alongside Nelly and Juicy J. With an enduring career spanning music and television, Ashanti continues to make significant contributions to the entertainment industry.
