Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper, known professionally as Cyndi Lauper, was born on June 22, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York. From a young age, Lauper exhibited a passion for music, ultimately opting to leave high school to pursue her dreams. This decision paid off when, after performing with local bands and attempting to launch a solo career with her first band, Blue Angel, she secured a record deal in 1983, setting the stage for her remarkable journey.
Lauper’s debut album, She’s So Unusual, released in 1983, catapulted her to stardom, with the standout single “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” becoming a cultural anthem. The album was groundbreaking, making her the first female artist to achieve four top-five hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including fan favorites like “Time After Time” and “All Through the Night.” Lauper’s vibrant personality and distinctive style resonated with audiences, cementing her status in music history and earning her the Best New Artist award at the 27th Annual Grammy Awards in 1985.
Following up on her initial success, Lauper released True Colors in 1986, which included two more top-five hits: the title track and "Change of Heart." Although it received acclaim, it did not replicate the commercial success of her debut. In the late 1980s, she released A Night to Remember, which featured the single “I Drove All Night.” After a brief hiatus, Lauper made a triumphant return with Hat Full of Stars in 1993 and has continued to create music, with notable albums such as Twelve Deadly Cyns… and Then Some (1994) and Bring Ya to the Brink (2008), the latter earning her a Grammy nomination.
In addition to her music career, Lauper has made significant strides in theater and television. She composed the music for the critically acclaimed Broadway musical Kinky Boots, earning her a Tony Award for Best Original Score in 2013. This accomplishment made her the first woman to win the category solo. She also won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album for the cast recording of Kinky Boots, further establishing her versatility as an artist.
Throughout her career, Lauper has sold over 50 million records worldwide and received numerous accolades, including two Grammy Awards, an Emmy Award, and more, emphasizing her impact across the entertainment industry. In recent years, she actively participates in humanitarian work, particularly advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, and she was involved in fundraising efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Looking ahead, Lauper celebrated her deep-rooted legacy with the announcement of a documentary, Let The Canary Sing, which chronicles her journey in music. Premiering in June 2023, the film showcases Lauper’s influence and the milestones of her career. In 2024, she plans to embark on her "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour," thanking her devoted fans while she remains in good health.
As of 2024, Lauper continues to be an active and vibrant presence in the music industry, with new projects on the horizon, including collaborations and performances. She remains a celebrated artist with a lasting impact, inspiring new generations with her powerful voice and commitment to advocacy.
