Eric Patrick Clapton, born on March 30, 1945, in Ripley, Surrey, England, is widely regarded as one of the most influential and successful rock and blues guitarists in music history. From a young age, Clapton exhibited a passion for music that began with a birthday gift of an acoustic guitar. He was profoundly shaped by the sounds of iconic blues musicians such as Howlin’ Wolf, Son House, and Robert Johnson, leading him to develop a unique guitar style that he first showcased during his time with the Yardbirds and John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers in the mid-1960s.
In 1966, Clapton co-founded the groundbreaking supergroup Cream alongside drummer Ginger Baker and bassist Jack Bruce. With signature tracks like “White Room” and “Sunshine of Your Love,” the band's pioneering blend of blues and psychedelic rock solidified Clapton's reputation as a standout guitarist. Following Cream's breakup in 1968, he formed the short-lived band Blind Faith and subsequently launched a successful solo career, beginning with his eponymous album in 1970. Clapton's solo journey quickly gained momentum, particularly with the 1974 cover of Bob Marley’s “I Shot the Sheriff,” which helped introduce reggae to mainstream audiences.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Clapton released a series of bestselling albums, including Slowhand (1977) and August (1986). His personal life, however, brought profound challenges. In 1991, the tragic death of his four-year-old son, Conor, profoundly affected Clapton, leading to his poignant composition "Tears in Heaven," featured on his Unplugged album. This emotional impact fueled a string of successful albums throughout the 1990s and into the new millennium, including From the Cradle (1994) and Pilgrim (1998), showcasing his ability to evolve as an artist while grappling with personal loss.
Clapton has been celebrated with numerous accolades, including 18 Grammy Awards and the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. He is the only three-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame—once as a solo artist and again as a member of both the Yardbirds and Cream. He has sold over 100 million records globally, making him one of the best-selling musicians of all time. In addition to his musical career, Clapton established the Crossroads Centre in Antigua in 1998, a treatment facility for individuals recovering from substance abuse, reflecting his own journey of overcoming addiction.
Despite facing health challenges, including a diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy, Clapton remains active in the music scene. He celebrated his 70th birthday in 2015 with a series of performances at prestigious venues, including Madison Square Garden and London's Royal Albert Hall. His commitment to live performance continues, as he has toured extensively over the years and maintains a schedule of concerts across the globe.
Clapton's most recent studio album, I Still Do, was released in 2016, accompanied by a live album, Live in San Diego. In May 2024, he plans to release a new album titled Meanwhile, which reflects his ongoing creativity and dedication to music. As he looks to the future, Clapton remains a treasured figure in the world of rock and blues, continuing to inspire new generations of musicians and fans alike.
