Matthew James Morrison, born on October 30, 1978, in California, is an accomplished American actor, dancer, and singer renowned for his portrayal of Will Schuester on the hit television series "Glee." Growing up in the Los Angeles area, he developed a passion for the performing arts from a young age. Morrison's formative training took place at the Orange County High School of the Arts, followed by a brief stint at New York University鈥檚 Tisch School of the Arts. However, he left NYU to seize a pivotal opportunity in the Broadway production of "Footloose."
The debut role in "Footloose" opened doors for Morrison on Broadway, leading him to star in several celebrated productions, most notably as Link Larkin in the original cast of "Hairspray." His performance in "The Light in the Piazza" earned him a Tony Award nomination, further establishing his credentials as a leading man in musical theater. Morrison also garnered attention for his role in "Finding Neverland," where he portrayed J.M. Barrie during its original Broadway run from 2015 to 2016.
Alongside his theatrical achievements, Matthew ventured into television, appearing in guest roles on popular series like "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," "CSI: Miami," and recurring roles on "As the World Turns" and "Ghost Whisperer." His film credits include "Marci X," "Music and Lyrics," "Dan in Real Life," and "What to Expect When You鈥檙e Expecting." He even entertained the idea of joining the boy band LMNT, a project that ultimately did not materialize but paved the way for his solo music career.
Morrison's breakthrough came in 2009 with "Glee," where he quickly became a household name as the enthusiastic high school glee club teacher, Will Schuester. His performance on the show received critical acclaim, resulting in numerous nominations for prestigious awards such as the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Emmy Awards, and Golden Globe Awards, solidifying his place in pop culture history.
In 2011, Matthew released his self-titled debut solo album under Mercury Records, which peaked within the top forty on the US mainstream charts. The album features popular singles like 鈥淪ummer Rain鈥 and 鈥淪till Got Tonight.鈥 Following the success of his first album, he released "Where It All Began" in 2013, showcasing his range as a solo artist.
Matthew's passion for performance extends beyond albums and theater; he starred as the Grinch in NBC's 2020 production "Dr. Seuss' The Grinch Musical Live!" demonstrating his versatility across various genres of entertainment. Additionally, he made his mark as a judge on reality dance competition shows, including "The Greatest Dancer" on BBC One and "So You Think You Can Dance" on Fox.
In recent years, Morrison signed with Adam Levine's 222 Records and continued to evolve as an artist. His journey through music, television, and theater illustrates a dedication to his craft and an ability to adapt within the dynamic landscape of the entertainment industry.
