Michael H. McDonald, born on February 12, 1952, is an influential American singer, songwriter, and keyboardist renowned for his distinctive, soulful voice. He first gained prominence as a backing vocalist for Steely Dan from 1975 to 1980, showcasing his unique vocal style. McDonald became the lead vocalist for the Doobie Brothers, where his contributions during their most successful years included classic hits like "What a Fool Believes," "Minute by Minute," and "Takin' It to the Streets." His dynamic presence helped shape the band鈥檚 sound and solidify their place in music history.
In 1982, Michael McDonald launched his solo career with the debut album If That鈥檚 What It Takes, which featured the hit single "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)." The song reached the R&B Top Ten and helped the album achieve number six on the charts. The following year, McDonald collaborated with James Ingram on "Yah Mo B There," further establishing his reputation as a solo artist. With his next albums, including No Lookin鈥 Back (1985) and the chart-topping duet "On My Own" with Patti LaBelle in 1986, McDonald continued to enjoy a series of hits, including "Sweet Freedom," featured in the film Running Scared.
Throughout the 1990s and into the new millennium, McDonald maintained his status as a prominent figure in the music industry. He performed "America the Beautiful" at the 2008 Democratic National Convention, an appearance that drew national attention. In 2009, he released Oh Happy Day, followed by The Voice of Michael McDonald, a compilation of his hits and those from the Doobie Brothers, in 2010. That same year, he toured with Boz Scaggs and Donald Fagen as part of The Dukes of September Rhythm Revue, showcasing a blend of soul, R&B, and classic rock.
In addition to his solo work, Michael McDonald has collaborated with an impressive array of artists across genres, including Van Halen, Aretha Franklin, and Joni Mitchell. His versatility and talent have made him a sought-after backing vocalist, contributing to numerous recordings by renowned acts such as Toto and Christopher Cross.
Most recently, McDonald rejoined the Doobie Brothers for their album World Gone Crazy, contributing vocals to the track "Don't Say Goodbye." His latest album, Wide Open, was released in 2017, further demonstrating his enduring appeal and creative energy in the music scene. Additionally, he appeared as a featured artist on Thundercat's single "Show You the Way," performing the song live on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Throughout his illustrious career, Michael McDonald has been recognized with numerous accolades, including five Grammy Awards. In 2020, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Doobie Brothers, a testament to his significant contributions to music and his lasting impact on American pop culture.
