A Tribe Called Quest is an American hip hop group formed in the mid-1980s by founding members Jarobi White, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Phife Dawg, and Q-Tip. The latter two members developed a friendship during childhood in New York City, where they began practicing and performing together, experimenting with a distinctive alternative hip-hop sound that would ultimately lead to their significant influence and fame in the genre.

The group recorded a series of demos that attracted attention from Jive Records, leading to the release of their debut album, People?? Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, in 1990. The album featured popular tracks such as ??an I Kick It?,? ??onita Applebum,? and ?? Left My Wallet in El Segundo,? earning acclaim as an alternative hip-hop classic. This debut was followed by a succession of critically and commercially successful albums, including The Low End Theory (1991), Midnight Marauders (1993), Beats, Rhymes, and Life (1996), and The Love Movement (1998). These albums produced additional hits like ??heck the Rhime,? ??ward Tour,? ??lectric Relaxation,? and ??cenario,? featuring collaborations with other artists.

Throughout their career, A Tribe Called Quest achieved remarkable success within the music industry, receiving multiple Grammy nominations and accumulating significant commercial recognition. However, the group disbanded in 1998 after the release of The Love Movement, leading individual members to explore solo projects.

In 2004, the original members reunited and performed a series of concerts across North America until 2013. Their continued popularity during this period showcased their enduring influence and the affection of their fan base.

In 2016, A Tribe Called Quest released their sixth and final album, We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service, which received critical acclaim and became their second album to reach the top of the Billboard 200 chart. This album featured posthumous contributions from Phife Dawg, who passed away eight months prior to the album's release.

A Tribe Called Quest is recognized as the most commercially successful act within the Native Tongues collective, with all six of their albums achieving either gold or platinum certification. The group has been praised by music critics, with AllMusic describing them as "the most intelligent, artistic rap group during the 1990s." Their contributions to hip hop have been acknowledged with numerous awards, including the Founders Award at the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Awards in 2005 and a Brit Award for International Group in 2017. In 2024, the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, cementing their legacy in music history.
