Rod Stewart’s illustrious career began in 1964 when he joined the group The Hoochie Coochie Men. He later performed with the band Steampacket, touring alongside the Rolling Stones, which expanded his exposure. Stewart's big break came in 1966 when Jeff Beck invited him to front the Jeff Beck Group, marking a pivotal moment in his career. After the group disbanded, Stewart found his stride performing with the Faces, all the while simultaneously embarking on a solo career.
In 1971, Stewart achieved his first number one hit with the iconic “Maggie May.” Following the release of the Faces' final album, he devoted himself fully to his solo endeavors. His next album, Atlantic Crossing, showcased his potential, and by 1978 he began to experiment with a different musical direction, exemplified in the hit single “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?” Between 1982 and 1988, Stewart scored three Top Ten hits, and his popularity skyrocketed in the 1990s, thanks in part to the rise of MTV.
The late 1990s saw Stewart successfully cover songs from a variety of artists, including Primal Scream and Oasis. As the new millennium unfolded, he continued this trend, releasing reinterpretations of classics from songwriters like Cole Porter and the Gershwins. This ability to reinvigorate timeless tracks helped solidify his status as a versatile artist.
Stewart's 2006 album, Still the Same… Great Rock Classics of our Time, debuted at number one on the Billboard charts, further proving his staying power in the music industry. He followed this with the 2009 release of Rod Stewart Sessions 1971-1998, a compilation of previously unreleased tracks. Between 2010 and 2015, he launched a series of albums, including Once in a Blue Moon, Time, and Another Country, while also embarking on a successful Vegas residency, Rod Stewart: The Hits, which ran from 2011 to 2017.
Regarded as one of the era’s most legendary rock stars, Stewart was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame a decade later. Throughout his career, he has sold over 100 million records and boasts an impressive catalog of 62 hit singles, with 31 hitting the Top Ten. Billboard Magazine acknowledges him as one of the most successful artists in their Hot 100 Top All-Time Artists list, while Rolling Stone ranks him among the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.
Stewart's influence extends beyond mere sales; he was recognized in 2008 as the 17th most successful artist on the Billboard Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists list. His accolades include multiple Grammy and Brit Awards, and his induction into both the US and UK Music Hall of Fame. Notably, he was knighted in the 2016 Birthday Honours for his significant contributions to music and charitable endeavors.
Throughout the decades, Rod Stewart has not only remained relevant but has also continued to evolve as an artist. His ability to connect with audiences through his distinctive voice and compelling music has secured his place as a beloved icon in the music world.
