Thomas Alan Waits, born on December 7, 1949, in Pomona, California, is an acclaimed American musician, composer, songwriter, and actor renowned for his deep, gravelly voice and vivid storytelling. Growing up in a middle-class family, Waits was influenced by the work of Bob Dylan and the Beat Generation, which led him to start performing on the San Diego folk circuit during the 1970s. After relocating to Los Angeles in 1972, he immersed himself in the local music scene, quickly gaining recognition for his unique blend of jazz, blues, and folk, eventually catching the attention of Asylum Records.
Waits鈥 debut album, Closing Time, released in 1973, showcased his signature vocal growls and poetic lyrics, earning critical acclaim despite modest commercial success. As he continued to hone his craft, Waits opened for artists like Frank Zappa, and his stature began to grow with albums such as The Heart of Saturday Night (1974) and Small Change (1976). By the time Foreign Affairs was released in 1977, he had reached the top of the charts, solidifying his place in the music industry and paving the way for a prolific recording career that would produce albums like Blue Valentine (1978) and Bone Machine (1992), both of which won Grammy Awards.
With his songwriting delving into society's underbelly, Waits has created complex, three-dimensional characters in his lyrics. He has drawn upon a rich tapestry of musical influences, navigating various genres, including rock, Delta blues, opera, vaudeville, and experimental sounds. His distinctive style and relentless artistic evolution have earned him a devoted international following and significant critical acclaim. The Wall Street Journal noted his ability to chronicle the lives of the downtrodden with insight, establishing him as a "sensitive and sympathetic" artist.
In addition to his musical pursuits, Tom Waits has made a mark in the film industry with notable roles in movies such as Paradise Alley (1978), The Outsiders (1983), and Francis Ford Coppola's One from the Heart (1982), which he also composed the soundtrack for. His collaborations extend to Jim Jarmusch films like Down by Law (1986) and Coffee and Cigarettes (2003). In 1980, he married Kathleen Brennan, whose encouragement led Waits to explore a more eclectic sound with experimental elements, resulting in a celebrated trilogy of albums: Swordfishtrombones (1983), Rain Dogs (1985), and Franks Wild Years (1987).
Throughout his career, Waits has influenced countless musicians, with his songs covered by artists such as Bruce Springsteen and Norah Jones. His contributions to music were recognized in 2011 when he received induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where Neil Young aptly described him as a multifaceted talent who transcends genres. In his acceptance speech, Waits humorously acknowledged the perception that he has "no hits" and that he is "difficult to work with," treating these critiques as badges of honor.
As a published poet, with works like Seeds on Hard Ground, and a dedicated artist who continues to perform and create, Tom Waits remains an enigmatic figure in modern music. His most recent studio album, Bad as Me, released in 2011, exemplifies his unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of musical artistry, ensuring that his legacy endures for generations to come.
