Micky Dolenz, born George Michael Dolenz Jr. on March 8, 1945, is an American musician and actor best known as the drummer and one of the primary vocalists for the pop rock band The Monkees. Dolenz began his career in the entertainment industry at a young age, starring in the children鈥檚 television series Circus Boy when he was just eleven, where he honed his skills in singing and performing. His early musical journey involved playing guitar and performing with various local bands in Los Angeles before he was eventually selected to join The Monkees.
The audition process for The Monkees attracted hundreds of hopefuls, but only four鈥擬ichael Nesmith, Peter Tork, Davy Jones, and Dolenz鈥攚ere chosen to form the iconic band. They quickly rose to prominence with their debut single, 鈥淟ast Train to Clarksville,鈥 which launched a highly successful television series that captivated audiences and generated a string of hit songs. The Monkees released several chart-topping albums, including The Monkees (1966), More of the Monkees (1967), Headquarters (1967), and Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd (1967), featuring beloved singles like 鈥淒aydream Believer鈥 and 鈥淚鈥檓 a Believer.鈥 Their television show maintained high ratings for two consecutive years, solidifying their place in pop culture.
As the band eventually disbanded, Micky Dolenz transitioned into a successful career as an actor, director, and musician. His television credits include memorable roles in popular series such as Days of Our Lives, The Drew Carey Show, and General Hospital. In addition, Dolenz showcased his directing talents on shows like Pacific Blue and Boy Meets World. A resurgence of interest in The Monkees was sparked in 1986 when MTV re-aired the series, leading to a reunion of the group for a new single, 鈥淭hat Was Then, This Is Now,鈥 as well as a new album titled Pool It! and a successful tour.
Dolenz has continued to remain active in the music scene, consistently touring and performing. He has made occasional cameos in film and television and joined his fellow Monkees members Peter Tork and Davy Jones for a 45th anniversary tour in 2011. Following the untimely passing of Davy Jones in 2012, Dolenz and Tork collaborated with Michael Nesmith, continuing to tour through 2014, honoring the legacy of their band.
In 2016, Micky Dolenz explored new musical horizons by collaborating with Peter Noone to record An Evening with Peter Noone & Micky Dolenz, a spoken word album that showcases their artistry and shared experiences. Throughout his varied career, Dolenz has remained an influential figure in entertainment and music, recognized for his significant contributions to the pop rock genre.
As the last surviving member of The Monkees, Micky Dolenz carries on the legacy of the beloved band, continuing to inspire new generations with his music and performances.
