Sha Na Na is an American rock and roll and doo-wop revival group that was formed in 1969. Their unique blend of song-and-dance routines, based on 1950s hit songs, both revived and parodied the music and street culture of that era. The group quickly rose to fame, with a significant turning point being their performance at the iconic Woodstock Music and Art Fair, where they garnered attention with the help of their friend Jimi Hendrix.
Originally created by undergraduate members of a glee club ensemble at Columbia University in New York, Sha Na Na began their journey performing a cappella versions of classic 1950s rock songs. Their lively performances, often outfitted in gold lam? and leather jackets, along with their signature pompadour and ducktail hairstyles, became a hallmark of their image. The group's name derived from the catchy nonsense syllables in the song "Get a Job," originally recorded by the Silhouettes.
Following their successful appearance at Woodstock, Sha Na Na landed a record deal and went on to host their own syndicated variety series, Sha Na Na, which aired from 1977 to 1981. The band reached new heights with their participation in the smash hit movie Grease, which helped solidify their fan base and increase their popularity tremendously. Their contributions to the Grease soundtrack, which won numerous awards and sold millions of copies, further established them as a prominent musical force.
Sha Na Na is well-known for a number of hit singles featured in the Grease soundtrack, including "Hound Dog," "Those Magic Changes," "Rock & Roll is Here to Stay," "Blue Moon," "Born to Hand Jive," and "Tears on My Pillow." Besides their work in film, they actively participated in the Woodstock movie and made numerous appearances on television, showcasing their talent and versatility beyond the stage.
Despite changing musical landscapes, Sha Na Na has demonstrated remarkable resilience, continuing to tour extensively and perform regularly over the years. The group typically holds over one hundred concerts annually, gracing the stages of performing arts centers, corporate functions, and casino showrooms around the world.
Though they released their last regular album in 2006, they continued to offer compilation albums to their loyal audience. However, on December 5, 2022, Sha Na Na announced that they would be ceasing their touring activities. The band leaves behind a rich legacy in the music industry, celebrated for their contributions to the revival of classic rock and roll and doo-wop culture.
