ir Thomas Jones Woodward, known professionally as Tom Jones, was born on June 7, 1940, in Wales. His musical journey began in 1963 with a Welsh beat group, followed by a series of solo demos that initially only garnered moderate interest. However, his fortunes changed when he was discovered by former Viscounts singer and artist manager Gordon Mills, who propelled him to stardom.
In 1964, Jones released "Chills and Fever," which received a lukewarm response, but it was the following year's "It's Not Unusual" that catapulted him into the spotlight, reaching the Top Ten in the United States. This success was soon followed by other hits, such as "Once Upon a Time," "Little Lonely One," and "With These Hands." During this prolific period, he also recorded memorable film themes, including "What's New Pussycat?" and "Thunderball," showcasing his versatility across genres.
Throughout the late 1960s, Jones maintained a steady career in both the UK and the United States. His variety television program, This is Tom Jones, launched in 1969 and ran until 1971, solidifying his status in American entertainment and paving the way for his legendary performances in Las Vegas, which began in 1967. Over the decades, Jones explored various avenues, performing at notable events such as the Glastonbury Festival in 1993 and releasing the dance-pop album The Lead and How to Swing It in 1994.
Tom Jones's musical repertoire spans pop, R&B, show tunes, country, dance, soul, and gospel, with over 100 million records sold globally. His impressive catalog features 36 Top 40 hits in the UK and 19 in the US, including classics like "Green, Green Grass of Home," "Delilah," "Sex Bomb," and a cover of Prince's " Kiss." The New York Times even described him as a "musical shapeshifter," adept at transitioning from soulful rasp to sweet pop croon with remarkable ease.
In addition to his music career, Jones has dabbled in acting, starting with the lead role in the television film Pleasure Cove (1979) and making a cameo as himself in Tim Burton's Mars Attacks! (1996). He earned nominations for a Golden Globe for his variety show and appeared in dramatic roles, including an episode of Playhouse Presents in 2012. His accolades include a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1966 and recognition as Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1998, culminating in a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II in 2006.
In recent years, Jones experienced a resurgence in popularity as a coach on The Voice UK from 2012 to 2015 and again from 2017 onwards. His contributions to music have also been recognized with two Brit Awards for Best British Male and Outstanding Contribution to Music. Tom Jones continues to grace stages worldwide, embodying a career characterized by remarkable versatility and enduring appeal.
