Squeeze is an iconic English rock band that emerged in the 1970s and became renowned during the new wave era. Formed in Deptford, London, in 1974, the original lineup comprised Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford on vocals and guitar, along with Paul Gunn on drums and Jools Holland on keyboards. Initially adopting various names, including Skyco and Captain Trundlow’s Sky Company, they eventually settled on Squeeze, a nod to the Velvet Underground album of the same name. After some early lineup changes, including Gunn’s departure and Gilson Lavis’ arrival on drums, the band solidified its sound by bringing in bassist Harry Kakoulli.
Squeeze quickly established themselves in the local London music scene, releasing their debut album, Packet of Three, in 1977. Over the next few years, the band found success with albums like Cool for Cats (1979) and Argybargy (1980), which featured chart-topping tracks. Squeeze gained a loyal following throughout the 1980s, often headlining prominent venues like New York City's Madison Square Garden as they toured extensively.
The band's lineup continued to evolve, with Jools Holland leaving in 1980 and Paul Carrack joining as his replacement. Squeeze reached new heights with their 1981 release, East Side Story, widely regarded as their most iconic work. Following Carrack's departure post-album, Don Snow joined to continue the trend of successful releases, culminating in the 1982 album Sweets from a Stranger. Despite their success, Squeeze disbanded in 1998 after releasing their final album, Domino.
Following their initial breakup, both Difford and Tilbrook remained active in the music scene and toured internationally throughout the new millennium. By 2010, they announced their reunion and began crafting new material for Squeeze, resulting in the album Spot the Difference, which featured newly recorded versions of their earlier hits. Their subsequent tours through the United States and the UK reinvigorated their fanbase and established a newfound energy for the band.
In the years that followed, Squeeze continued to produce new music, releasing Cradle to the Grave in 2015—marking their first album of original material in nearly two decades. This was followed by The Knowledge in 2017, further showcasing their enduring talent and relevance in the rock music landscape. An extensive tour throughout North America and Australia in support of these albums kept Squeeze performing well into 2018, captivating audiences with their catchy sound and clever lyrics.
With a musical partnership characterized by the songwriting prowess of Difford and the melodic craftsmanship of Tilbrook, Squeeze has frequently been likened to the legendary Lennon and McCartney. Their contribution to the music scene has not only garnered them a devoted fanbase but has also paved the way for the successful careers of both Jools Holland and Paul Carrack as keyboardists. Today, Squeeze continues to write, record, and perform, solidifying their legacy as one of the most influential bands of their generation.
