Ringo Starr, born Richard Starkey on July 7, 1940, in Liverpool, Lancashire, England, faced a challenging childhood marked by various illnesses, including appendicitis and pleurisy, which significantly interrupted his education. Unable to attend school regularly, Ringo turned to music, immersing himself in the vibrant Liverpool music scene. In 1957, he and his friend Eddie Miles formed the Clayton Skiffle Group, a venture that laid the groundwork for his musical career. By 1960, he had joined the Raving Texans, which later became known as Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, a band that played an essential role in the local music circuit and led to his pivotal meeting with the Beatles in Hamburg.
Ringo's drumming prowess caught the attention of the Beatles, who ultimately invited him to join the band, replacing their original drummer in August 1962. For the next eight years, Ringo played a vital role in the Beatles鈥 phenomenal success until their breakup in 1970. Following the dissolution of the band, he launched a successful solo career, releasing a series of albums, including Sentimental Journey (1970), Ringo (1973), Goodnight Vienna (1974), and Stop and Smell the Roses (1981). His notable singles from this period included "It Don't Come Easy," "Photograph," and "Only You (And You Alone)."
In 1989, Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band made its debut in Texas, combining his solo material with beloved Beatles songs, leading to successful tours that extended well into the new millennium. The popularity of these tours culminated in a compilation CD released in 1990. In 1992, he returned to the studio with Time Takes Time, showcasing his collaboration with various notable musicians. His work during this time reinforced his status as a solo artist while still honoring his Beatles legacy.
The late 1990s marked the beginning of a new chapter in Ringo鈥檚 career as he partnered with producer Mark Hudson to release a series of albums on the Mercury label, starting with Vertical Man in 1998. Their collaboration yielded additional albums throughout the 2000s, such as Ringo Rama (2003), Liverpool 8 (2008), and Postcards from Paradise (2015). In 2013, he embarked on an international tour following the release of Ringo 2012, performing in Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.
Recognized for his drumming style, which emphasizes feel over technicality, Ringo has influenced countless musicians and modern drumming techniques. In 2011, he was voted the fifth-greatest drummer of all time by Rolling Stone readers. He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice鈥攆irst as a member of the Beatles in 1988 and again as a solo artist in 2015鈥攁nd was honored as a Knight Bachelor in 2018 for his contributions to music.
Even as he approached his eighties, Ringo Starr remained active, releasing new music and performing live. He celebrated his 80th birthday in 2020 with a star-studded live-stream concert featuring many of his friends and collaborators. In December 2020, he released the song "Here's to the Nights," leading to his 2021 EP, Zoom In. In 2023, Ringo announced a U.S. tour alongside the release of the EP Rewind Forward and plans for another album titled Look Up, produced by T Bone Burnett, scheduled for release in January 2025. Ringo Starr's ongoing commitment to music and performance highlights his lasting impact on the industry.
