Anthony Moses Davis, known professionally as Beenie Man, was born on August 22, 1973, in Kingston, Jamaica. He was introduced to music at an early age, influenced by his uncle, who played drums for Jimmy Cliff. Beenie Man began toasting and participating in talent contests before the age of ten, showcasing his natural talent and passion for music.
His music career officially began with the release of his debut single, "Too Fancy," in 1981. By 1983, he had released his first album, The Invincible Beenie Man: The Ten Year Old DJ Wonder. He gained further recognition that year through a performance on Lawes' Junjo Presents Two Big Sounds, which highlighted his extraordinary skills at a young age. However, it was during the 1990s that Beenie Man truly began to ascend to stardom.
A pivotal performance at Reggae Sunsplash in 1992 marked Beenie Man's re-entry into the music scene as a polished adult artist. He achieved significant success with a reworked version of Bob Marley?? classic ??o Mama No Cry,? which topped the Jamaican charts. This success was followed by hit singles like ??orld Dance? and ??raise Him.? Subsequently, he signed with Island Records and released the album Blessed, featuring hits such as ??lam.? This period also saw collaborations on several albums, including Mad Cobra Meets Lt. Stitchie & Beenie Man and Three Against War (with Triston Palma and Dennis Brown).
Throughout his career, Beenie Man has released a series of successful albums, including Many Moods of Moses (1997), Ruff????uff (1999), The Doctor (1999), Art and Life (2000), Black Liberty (2001), Tropical Storm (2002), and Back to Basics (2004). His songs, such as ??irls Dem Sugar? (2000), ??eel It Boy? (2002), ??ude? (2004), and ??ing of the Dancehall? (2004), became anthems within the dancehall genre.
In 2009, Beenie Man signed with Brookland Entertainment and released The Legend Returns. In 2014, he collaborated with fellow artist Bounty Killer on the single ??egendary,? marking a significant moment in their long-standing rivalry. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the two participated in a well-received Verzuz battle on Instagram in May 2020, further solidifying their status as icons within the dancehall community.
As of 2025, Beenie Man remains active in the music industry, continuing to perform and record. His accolades include being awarded the DJ of the Year Award for eight consecutive years and receiving a Grammy Award for his twelfth studio album, Art and Life, in 2001. He is recognized for his contributions to the dancehall genre and continues to influence both new and established artists in the realm of Jamaican music.
