Journey, an iconic rock band founded in the 1970s by guitarist Neil Schon, bassist Ross Valory, keyboardist Gregg Rolie, and drummer Prairie Prince, emerged as a powerful force in the San Francisco music scene. The band released its self-titled debut album in 1975. However, it was the 1977 addition of vocalist Steve Perry that would truly define their sound and propel them to stardom. Perry's remarkable voice resonated with audiences, transforming Journey into one of the most recognizable names in music.
Over the next decade, Journey enjoyed a string of highly successful albums, including Infinity (1978), which achieved platinum status, Evolution (1979), Departure (1980), and the live album Captured (1981). Their 1981 release, Escape, marked a significant milestone with massive hits like "Who's Crying Now," "Don't Stop Believin'," and "Open Arms." The album achieved a staggering nine-times platinum certification and solidified the band's reputation for crafting memorable melodies. Following Escape, Journey released Frontiers in 1983, which featured the hit "Separate Ways." After a brief hiatus, Raised on Radio emerged in 1986, but the band entered another longer break until the early 1990s, releasing For the Love of Strange Medicine in 1994, followed by Trial by Fire in 1996.
Journey's legacy continued into the new millennium despite the departure of Perry. In 2007, the band began their search for a new lead singer, ultimately discovering Filipino vocalist Arnel Pineda. Found performing Journey covers on YouTube, Pineda's voice closely mirrored Perry's and reinvigorated the band’s sound. His arrival coincided with the release of the album Revelation, which debuted at number five on the Billboard charts and set the stage for a series of successful tours, including one of the highest-grossing concert tours of 2008. Journey's second album featuring Pineda, Eclipse, was released in 2011, followed by Journey: Greatest Hits: Volume 2 later that year.
Journey continued to engage fans globally, exemplified by the 2012 premiere of the documentary Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey at the Tribeca Film Festival. This film chronicles not only Pineda's discovery but also offers a behind-the-scenes look at the band over the course of a year. Their status as rock legends was further cemented when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, coinciding with an extensive nationwide tour.
In March 2020, the band faced significant internal strife, as Schon and keyboardist Jonathan Cain alleged that Valory and drummer Steve Smith attempted a corporate coup. This led to a series of legal battles regarding the band's trademarks and positions, with various outcomes and personnel changes in tow. In April 2021, a settlement was reached, resulting in the return of bassist Randy Jackson and drummer Narada Michael Walden.
Emerging from these turbulent times, the band announced the development of new music in June 2020, culminating in the release of their 15th studio album, Freedom, on July 8, 2022. The album was preceded by several singles and showcased the continued evolution of Journey's sound, though it was marked by ongoing lineup changes, including the departure of Walden and Jackson by early 2022.
As Journey sustains its iconic status, the band remains a dynamic force in rock music, constantly evolving and surprising fans. Their resilience is a testament to their legacy, with explorations into new music and live performances, ensuring that their journey is far from over. The release of their live album, Live in Concert at Lollapalooza, in December 2022 further solidifies their commitment to their ongoing musical journey, captivating audiences across generations.
