Declan Patrick MacManus, better known by his stage name Elvis Costello, was born on August 25, 1954. He began his career far from the stage, working as a computer programmer in the 1970s while performing in local clubs during his free time. His musical journey took a pivotal turn when a demo tape caught the attention of Jake Riviera, an executive at an independent record label. This led to Costello signing with Riviera in 1977, and soon after, the backing band known as The Attractions was formed, comprising Pete Thomas, Bruce Thomas, and Steve Nieve.

Costello's debut album, My Aim Is True, was released in 1977 and received moderate success, though it included some of his most enduring songs, such as "Alison."
