Luis Miguel Gallego Basteri, widely known as Luis Miguel, began his remarkable journey in music with a professional debut at just eleven years old. By the time he reached fifteen, the young Mexican star had already made a significant mark in the industry by winning his first Grammy Award for his collaboration with Sheena Easton on the single 鈥淢e Gustas Tal Como Eres" (I Like You Just The Way You Are). His early success set the stage for a prolific career that would span decades.
One of Luis Miguel's hallmark achievements is his album Segundo Romance, released in 1995, which not only earned him another Grammy but also contributed to his impressive collection of thirty-four platinum records throughout the Americas. His subsequent albums, including Musipistas (1996), Nada Es Igual (1996), and Amarte Es un Place (1999), further solidified his standing in Latin music. In 2000, he won the Latin Grammy for Male Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Album, highlighting his continued relevance and popularity in the genre, along with receiving a nomination for Favorite Latin Artist at the American Music Awards three years later.
In 2004, he released M茅xico en la Piel, an album showcasing traditional mariachi selections that achieved tremendous commercial success, selling three million copies and leading to a global tour. The following year, he released Grandes 脡xitos, a greatest hits compilation featuring new material like 鈥淪i Te Perdiera鈥 and 鈥淢isterios Del Amor.鈥 His 2005 Christmas album, Navidades, debuted at number one on the Latin charts, and his 2008 album C贸mplices further demonstrated his staying power, selling an extraordinary 350,000 copies on its first day and including popular singles like "Te Desean" and "Si Tu Te Atreves."
Throughout his illustrious career, Luis Miguel has won four Latin Grammys and five Grammys, making history as the only Latin artist to have two Spanish-language albums鈥擱omance and Segundo Romance鈥攁chieve platinum status in the United States. His captivating live performances contribute to his status as the highest-grossing Latino touring artist since Boxscore began tracking touring data in 1990, with total earnings surpassing $278.5 million. His Luis Miguel Tour in 2010 was particularly notable, encompassing 223 shows across 22 countries in North America, South America, and Europe, marking it as one of the longest and highest-grossing tours ever by a Latin artist.
In 2017, Luis Miguel鈥檚 life story garnered significant attention when Telemundo signed a deal to produce an official biographical television series, set to air in 2018. This announcement coincided with Netflix acquiring streaming rights for Latin America and Spain, preparing to tell the intricate and engaging narrative of Miguel's life and career. The series not only highlights his rise to fame but also evokes nostalgic memories through personal anecdotes and performances.
On October 27, 2017, Luis Miguel released his single "La Fiesta del Mariachi," followed by the album 隆M茅xico Por Siempre! on November 24, featuring 14 tracks of traditional Mexican music. His tour commenced in February 2018 at the National Auditorium in Mexico City and concluded in September 2019 in Las Vegas, further showcasing his unwavering commitment to live performances and his musical heritage. As of October 2020, Luis Miguel continues to rank high on Billboard's Greatest of All-Time Latin Artists chart, solidifying his legacy as one of the most celebrated figures in Latin music.
