Jody Watley, an acclaimed American singer and songwriter, was born in 1959 in Chicago, Illinois. From a young age, she was immersed in a musical environment fostered by her godfather, the legendary Jackie Wilson, who encouraged her budding talent. Jody made her performance debut alongside Wilson at the tender age of eight and, as a teenager, gained prominence as a dancer on the iconic TV show Soul Train.
In 1977, Watley joined the popular R&B group Shalamar, where she found considerable success until her departure in 1983. The group produced numerous hits during the late 70s and early 80s, including classics like 鈥淪econd Time Around鈥 and 鈥淎 Night to Remember.鈥 After leaving Shalamar, Jody moved to England and pursued various musical projects before returning to the U.S. as a solo artist under MCA Records.
Watley's self-titled debut album was released in 1987 and quickly became a sensation, propelled by the smash hit 鈥淟ooking for a New Love,鈥 which climbed to the top ten on mainstream charts and secured the number one spot on the R&B charts. The album produced several other notable singles, including 鈥淪till a Thrill,鈥 鈥淒on鈥檛 You Want Me,鈥 鈥淪ome Kind of Lover,鈥 and 鈥淢ost of All.鈥 In recognition of her remarkable talent, Jody Watley received a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1988, along with multiple nominations for Soul Train Awards and MTV Video Music Awards.
Throughout her career, Jody Watley has continued to release music, including albums such as Affairs of the Heart (1991), Intimacy (1993), Affection (1995), Flower (1998), The Saturday Night Experience (1999), Midnight Lounge (2001), and The Makeover (2006). Her catalog boasts an array of hit singles, such as 鈥淩eal Love,鈥 鈥淔riends,鈥 鈥淓verything,鈥 and 鈥淚鈥檓 the One You Need.鈥 In 2013, she made a successful return with the single 鈥淣ightlife,鈥 which topped dance charts internationally, indicating that she was still a relevant force in the music scene.
In recognition of her contributions to music and culture, Jody Watley was named the First Ambassador of the National Museum of African American Music in March 2021. Her influence and accomplishments have led to several accolades, including an honorary doctorate in business and a Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Joe Biden during the celebration of Jody Watley Day at the Georgia State Capitol in 2022. Furthermore, that same year, she was inducted into the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame, cementing her legacy in the music industry.
Continuing to remain a vibrant presence in the musical landscape, Jody Watley saw the launch of "The Jody Watley Show" on Sirius XM Satellite Radio in 2023. This monthly show showcases her insights into life, music, and culture, featuring celebrity guests alongside classic R&B hits, further solidifying her status as an influential figure in the industry.
