Born in Alberta, Canada, KD Lang emerged as a prominent figure in country music in 1987, quickly attracting attention and controversy with her rock-influenced sound and androgynous appearance. Her passion for music developed during her college years, particularly through her admiration for Patsy Cline's songs. In 1983, alongside fellow songwriter and guitarist Ben Mink, she formed the band The Reclines. Their debut album, Friday Dance Promenade, achieved moderate success, while their follow-up, A Truly Western Experience (1984), garnered greater national recognition and set the stage for Lang's solo career.
KD Lang's talent did not go unnoticed; she was awarded the Juno Award for Most Promising Female Vocalist in 1985. By the next year, she secured a recording contract with Sire Records, leading to the release of her first album under the label, Angel with a Lariat. This innovative album blended rockabilly, honky-tonk country, and 1950s-style ballads, becoming a hit in the U.S. despite remaining somewhat underground. Lang's true breakthrough arrived with her duet "Crying" alongside Roy Orbison, featured in the film Hiding Out, which propelled her into the spotlight and established her as a household name.
Lang's subsequent albums demonstrated her growing prominence in the music industry. Her 1988 release Shadowland, produced by Patsy Cline’s collaborator, went gold, followed by the critically acclaimed Absolute Torch and Twang (1989), which earned her a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance, Female. However, it was Ingénue that solidified her status as a major artist; with the hit single "Constant Craving," she secured her place on the Top 40 charts and earned another Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female. The album achieved platinum status in the U.S. and went multi-platinum in Canada.
In the ensuing years, Lang continued to explore her artistry through various projects, including the soundtrack for Even Cowgirls Get the Blues (1993) and All You Can Eat (1995). Her 2000 release, Invincible Summer, followed by Hymns of the 49th Parallel in 2004, showcased her evolving musical style. Throughout the 2000s, KD Lang remained active; in 2007, she collaborated with Anne Murray for a remake of "A Love Song," and by 2008, she released the album Watershed. Her first greatest-hits collection, Recollection, arrived in 2010, further cementing her legacy.
In 2013, KD Lang was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, a testament to her influence in the music industry. Beyond her musical endeavors, she has ventured into acting, appearing as a lead in Salmonberries (1991) and co-starring in Eye of the Beholder (1999), as well as guest roles on How I Met Your Mother (2013) and Portlandia (2014). During her career, Lang has also embraced collaboration, notably partnering with Neko Case and Laura Veirs on the album project case/lang/veirs in 2016.
In recent years, KD Lang has continued to create and collaborate, contributing her distinctive voice to new projects. She participated in the tribute to Leonard Cohen, "Tower Of Song," in 2017, where she performed the iconic "Hallelujah." In 2020, she lent her voice to The Killers' song "Lightning Fields." Furthermore, in 2021, she released Makeover, a collection of classic dance remixes from 1992 to 2000, alongside reissues of some of her earlier recordings on vinyl. KD Lang's career exemplifies an extraordinary journey through music and artistry, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of contemporary music.
