Angela Tomasa Bofill (May 2, 1954 ? June 13, 2024) was an American jazz and R&B singer-songwriter of Cuban-Puerto Rican descent, known for her distinctive voice and impactful contributions to the music industry. A native of New York City, Bofill began her professional career in the mid-1970s, initially performing with Ricardo Marrero & the Group and the Dance Theater of Harlem chorus. Her career took a significant turn following an introduction to jazz label executives Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen, leading to her signing with GRP Records.
Bofill?? debut album, Angie, was released in 1978 and received both critical and commercial success. The album featured popular singles such as "Under the Moon and Over the Sky" and "This Time I??l Be Sweeter," the latter co-written by Gwen Guthrie. Following the success of her debut, Bofill released her second album, Angel of the Night, in 1979, which included hits like "What I Wouldn?? Do (For the Love of You)" and the title track "Angel of the Night." These early albums positioned her as one of the first Latina artists to achieve prominence in the R&B and jazz genres.
Throughout her career, Bofill released an impressive total of ten studio albums, including Something About You (1981), Too Tough (1983), and Intuition (1988), demonstrating her versatility as an artist. Although some albums did not perform as well commercially, tracks from her discography, such as "I'm On Your Side" and "I Just Wanna Stop," garnered significant acclaim. Bofill's recording career was characterized by a series of successful collaborations and chart-topping hits that resonated with audiences.
In addition to her recording career, Bofill became known for her live performances, including a memorable concert at Avery Fisher Hall during the Newport Jazz Festival in 1980, where she performed with a large ensemble featuring notable musicians. She explored different musical styles and attempted to broaden her appeal by switching labels and working with various producers, including Narada Michael Walden.
Bofill faced significant health challenges later in her life, suffering a series of strokes that affected her ability to sing. Despite these setbacks, she continued to perform, participating in shows like "The Angela Bofill Experience," where she shared her life story alongside other artists who celebrated her contributions. She also appeared in the documentary series Unsung, which highlighted her career and struggles.
Over her four-decade-long career, Angela Bofill's contributions to music have been recognized with various accolades, culminating in her induction into the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2023.
