Dame Shirley Veronica Bassey, born on January 8, 1937, in Cardiff, Wales, is a legendary singer celebrated for her powerful voice and unparalleled career longevity. Raised in a large and impoverished family, Bassey's talent for singing became her means of rising above challenging circumstances. As a teenager, she left school to perform in local pubs and clubs, eventually touring with revues across the UK. Her big break came in 1955 while performing at a Christmas show in London, where Comedian Al Read recognized her talent and invited her to join his revue, Such Is Life.
In 1957, Bassey released her first single, "Banana Boat Song," which soared into the Top Ten on the British charts. This success was followed by a string of additional hits like "Reach for the Stars/Climb Every Mountain," "Kiss Me, Honey Honey, Kiss Me," and "As I Love You." Bassey's dynamic performances quickly gained her international recognition, leading her to headline shows in Las Vegas and New York. The defining moment of her career arrived in 1965 when she recorded the iconic title song for the James Bond film Goldfinger, forever solidifying her place in music history.
Bassey's string of hits continued into the following decade with songs such as "Never Never Never," "For All We Know," and "Something." Her achievements were recognized in 1977 when she earned a Britannia Award for Best Female Solo Singer. By the early 1980s, seeking a more balanced lifestyle, she semi-retired to Switzerland, though she continued to tour and make appearances. The 1990s saw her resurgence, including two world tours and appearances in several prominent concerts.
The release of a box set titled Bassey by EMI in 1994 marked another significant moment in her storied career. In 1996, she appeared in the film La Passione, followed by notable performances in 1998 at an open-air concert near the Great Pyramid in Egypt and in the film Little Voice. Bassey also performed at the Queen鈥檚 50th Jubilee Party in 2002 and repeated the honor for the Queen鈥檚 60th a decade later. The release of her 2003 album Thank You for the Years celebrated fifty years in show business, climbing into the Top Twenty.
In 2009, Bassey collaborated with David Arnold to create The Performance, an album celebrated at the BBC Electric Proms. She continued to perform at high-profile events, including a concert for the Rainforest Foundation Fund in New York City. In subsequent years, she delivered renditions of her classic songs "Goldfinger" and "Diamonds Are Forever" with the Royal Philharmonic.
Bassey's illustrious career has amassed numerous awards and accolades, including an EMI Award for her twenty years as a recording artist, a Grammy nomination for The Birthday Concert in 1997, and the title of Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2000. Her song "Goldfinger" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008, and she has sold over 140 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling female artists of all time.
Today, Bassey continues to captivate audiences with her performances. In recent years, she has performed for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and in 2014, she released her album Hello Like Before, featuring a re-recording of "Goldfinger" to commemorate the 50th anniversary of its release. With her remarkable talent and enduring legacy, Shirley Bassey remains a beloved figure in the world of music.
