Shawn Colvin, born in 1956 in Vermillion, South Dakota, is an acclaimed American musician whose journey into the world of music began at a young age. Self-taught on the guitar, she started performing at local venues while in college at Southern Illinois University. Following her first paid gig, Colvin formed a band that extended its reach across Illinois. However, she faced personal struggles, including issues with drug and alcohol use, which led her to explore her musical talent more deeply.
Colvin eventually relocated to Austin, Texas, where she formed a country-swing group called the Dixie Diesels. This move marked the beginning of her immersion into the folk circuit, particularly in the vibrant scenes of Berkeley, California, and later New York City. In New York, she joined the Buddy Miller Band and became an active member of the Fast Folk cooperative in Greenwich Village. During this time, she also made her mark on the Off-Broadway scene, participating in shows such as Pump Boys and Dinettes.
Her breakthrough came in 1987 when she provided backup vocals for Suzanne Vega's hit single "Luka." This opportunity led to a recording contract with Columbia Records, and in 1989, she released her debut album, Steady On. The album received critical acclaim, earning Colvin a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Recording and paving the way for her follow-up project, Fat City, which arrived in 1992 and garnered further recognition.
Colvin’s third album, A Few Small Repairs, released in 1996, featured the hit single “Sunny Came Home,” which spent four weeks at the top of the Adult Contemporary chart. This song brought her two Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, while the album itself achieved platinum status, firmly establishing her career. Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, Colvin continued to release critically acclaimed albums, including Holiday Songs and Lullabies (1998) and Whole New You (2001).
In 2006, after leaving Columbia Records, Colvin released These Four Walls under Nonesuch Records, showcasing her evolved sound with contributions from acclaimed artists like Patty Griffin. She followed up with All Fall Down in 2012, recorded at Buddy Miller’s Nashville studio and featuring guest appearances from notable artists like Emmylou Harris and Alison Krauss. Adding to her accomplishments, Colvin published her memoir, Diamond in the Rough, in the same year.
Colvin's collaborations have cemented her place in the music industry, as she has worked with a variety of musicians, including James Taylor, Sting, and Bruce Hornsby. In 2016, she teamed up with fellow artist Steve Earle to release a collaborative album titled Colvin and Earle. Recognized for her contributions to music, she received the Americana Trailblazer Award at the Americana Music Honors & Awards, further highlighting her status as a significant figure in the singer/songwriter community. Through her enduring legacy, Shawn Colvin continues to captivate audiences with her poignant songwriting and soulful performances.
