En Vogue is an American vocal girl group that emerged from Oakland, California, in 1989, originally consisting of singers Terry Ellis, Dawn Robinson, Cindy Herron, and Maxine Jones. The group made a significant impact on the music scene with their debut album, Born to Sing, released in 1990, which achieved multi-platinum status and featured the hit single "Hold On," reaching No. 2 on the US Hot 100. This album established their reputation as a leading vocal group and introduced their harmonious blend of R&B, soul, and pop.
In 1992, En Vogue released their follow-up album, Funky Divas, which continued their commercial success, reaching the top 10 in both the US and UK. The album included notable singles such as "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)" and "Free Your Mind," and received five Grammy nominations. Throughout the 1990s, En Vogue maintained their prominence with additional hits, including "Don't Let Go (Love)," which became their most successful single, reaching No. 2 on the US charts and solidifying their legacy in the R&B genre.
The group’s third album, EV3, was released in 1997, but it was during this period that En Vogue underwent lineup changes. Robinson left the group shortly before the album's release, and Jones departed in 2001. Amanda Cole and later Rhona Bennett joined the group, allowing En Vogue to continue performing and recording under a new configuration. Despite these changes, they released several albums in the 2000s, including Soul Flower (2004).
In addition to their music albums, En Vogue has been involved in various collaborations and has made appearances in television and film. They performed in Batman Forever and have been featured on several television shows such as The View and Roc. The group has garnered numerous accolades throughout their career, including seven MTV Video Music Awards, three Soul Train Awards, and six American Music Awards, contributing to their recognition as one of the most successful female groups in music history.
In recent years, En Vogue has continued to release new music, including their 2018 album Electric Café, and to tour both domestically and internationally. They have participated in notable performances and events, demonstrating their sustained relevance in the music industry. Their participation in the seventh season of The Masked Singer in 2022 and their collaboration with contemporary artists reflect their ongoing adaptability to changing musical landscapes.
As of 2023, En Vogue remains an active group, continuing to perform at festivals and special events, including the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and various summer tours. The group's impact on both the R&B genre and the larger musical landscape is well-documented, with estimates of over 20 million records sold worldwide, solidifying their status as an influential vocal ensemble.
